Licuala spinosa is native to Southeast Asia. It typically thrives in forested areas around coastal swamps and other water-rich environments.

With a clumping habit, it can attain a height of 9 to 13 feet featuring slender stems with circular, divided fan leaves. Leaf stalks are savagely armed with numerous tiny spines that protect its extremely long and ornamental inflorescences and bright red fruit.

Licuala spinosa differs markedly from typical Licualas, in that it prefers full sun and is cold tolerant. It's capable of enduring temperatures as low as 25°F making it an easy grow and one of the most robust species of Licuala.
