Hoya australis is a tropical evergreen vine prized for its thick, glossy leaves and clusters of star-shaped, waxy flowers. Often grown as a trailing or climbing houseplant, it adds a lush, elegant touch to indoor spaces and shaded gardens.
This species is native to Australia and parts of Southeast Asia, where it naturally grows along rainforest edges and in rocky, coastal environments. Its adaptability makes it well-suited for both indoor and outdoor cultivation in warm climates.
Hoya australis produces stunning clusters of pure white, porcelain-like flowers with a soft pink or red center. The blooms are not only visually striking but also highly fragrant, especially in the evening. They are known to attract pollinators like butterflies in their natural habitat and can bloom multiple times a year under the right conditions.
-
Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some gentle morning sun, but avoid harsh direct sunlight that may scorch the leaves.
Allow the top inch or two of soil to dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly, but avoid letting the plant sit in soggy soil, as it is sensitive to overwatering.
Use a well-draining soil mix, such as a blend for orchids or houseplants with added perlite or bark to ensure proper aeration.
Thrives in temperatures between 65–85°F (18–29°C). It prefers warm, humid environments and should be protected from cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
-
Suitable for USDA zones 10–11. In cooler climates, it is best grown indoors or as a container plant that can be brought inside.
