Muscadines can be found growing wild and have been cultivated for hundreds of years by the South’s farmers and gardeners. The fruit, which ripens in August through November, can be eaten fresh or used in juice. It also adds a nice ornamental touch to a home. Thick skin gives muscadine grapes a natural resistance to disease, fungi, and insects, and is where much of the antioxidant power of the muscadine grape is stored. These thick skins account for 40% of the weight of the grape. Muscadine grapes need 100 plus chill hours (in Zones 7-9) and are self-pollinators. They reach a mature height of 6 to 8 feet and a width of 8 to 12 feet.
USDA ZONES: Zone 7, Zone 8, Zone 9
