Nasturtium - Climbing Amazon Jewel (Heirloom) - Tropacolum majus

Annual - This spellbinding nasturtium offers unusual variegated vining foliage and brilliant spurred blossoms in exotic and unusual shades of pumpkin, painted peachy-rose, ruby, gold and pale lemon. The single scented flowers shine out from among lily-pad shaped leaves splashed with patterns of emerald green and creamy white. The effect is a trailing jungle of gemstones as Amazon Jewel meanders gracefully to cover bare spots, adorn fences or cascade from containers, filling the garden with vibrant color.

Soil & Water: Climbing nasturtiums are easy to grow in any well-drained soil. Fertilizer is usually not necessary and too much nitrogen will create bountiful foliage without much flowering. You'll need to train young plants onto their supports with loose ties, then they'll climb easily and bloom non-stop. Do not let plants dry out during blooming season.

Planting & Growing:To Start Outdoors: Sow seeds in spring, once all danger of frost is over, in full sun (or part shade in hot climates). Poke seeds into well-worked soil about 1" deep and 3 - 4" apart. Press soil firmly over the seeds and keep moist. When seedlings are large enough to handle, thin to stand 10" apart, or 6 - 8" apart if training seedlings up vertical supports. To Start Early Indoors: Sow 2 seeds in individual 4" pots of well-drained seed starting mix 3 weeks before last expected frost date. Cover 1" deep. Provide a strong light source. When seedlings have several sets of leaves, pinch out the weaker seedling leaving 1 seedling per pot. When weather is evenly in the 50's, gradually acclimate to outdoor conditions. Transplant as above in full sun.

For perspective, we're talking about a three year old white german shepherd who if he's in the mood, has and can kill a toy within minutes or oddly enough be gentle with furry balls and carry them around as if they are his babies. He hasn't once chewed it or even teared little pieces off. The three settings are great. Sometimes he likes one better than another, then forgets about the others. I'll change it up to one he hasn't seen in a while and the whole game starts over again. He'll throw it up in the air as he does with his others, watch it and try to figure out which way it's going to go. And yes, he will pounce on it if he times it right. The size is perfect, it's heavier than your average ball but, that's what make it sturdy. I have to sneak it away when he isn't paying attention to charge it, otherwise he'll sit, stare and cry if he knows it's on the counter charging. It's a lot of fun for all of us. I'm so happy I bought it...... I say give this ball a chance even if you have a beast with killer instincts. I'm buying another for a friends 2 year old golden retriever granddog. Thank you Cheerble.
