Yellow Rattle is a fascinating annual wildflower, famously known as the "meadow maker" for its unique ability to help establish a diverse floral lawn. It is a semi-parasitic plant that grows amongst grass, tapping into the grass roots to draw nutrients and water. This process weakens the grass, reducing its vigour and creating space for more delicate wildflowers to grow and flourish. The plant itself has upright stems, small yellow flowers, and distinctive inflated seed pods that rattle when mature.
The germination of Yellow Rattle seed is entirely dependent on it experiencing a long period of cold, damp conditions to break its dormancy. Therefore, the seeds must be sown directly into an existing area of grass before the onset of prolonged cold weather. To prepare the area, cut the grass very short and then scarify it vigorously with a rake to expose patches of bare soil. Scatter the seeds onto this prepared turf and tread the area firmly to ensure the seeds make good contact with the earth.
This wildflower must be sown in a sunny spot in an existing lawn or meadow with low to average soil fertility. No feeding, support, or pruning is required. After the seeds have germinated and the plants have grown, it is vital to let them complete their life cycle. Do not cut the grass in the area until after the Yellow Rattle has flowered and its seed pods have dried, rattled, and shed their seed. This ensures the plant will return as part of the meadow in its next cycle of growth.
