• Tree ferns are excellent for shaded nooks and under the canopies of larger shade trees. They add a decidedly lush exotic character to any space, be it under eaves or in atriums. Give them plenty of room overhead and combine with large-leafed foliage plants and very fiery colored exotic flowers.
• Thrives in warm, humid environments with humus-rich, evenly moist, well-drained soil and dappled shade. Protect from harsh afternoon sun exposures in very hot regions. Apply a thick layer of mulch to keep the root zone cool and conserve moisture. Feed lightly, periodically throughout the year.
• Australian tree fern (Sphaeropteris cooperi) has a single trunk that can reach between 15 and 30 feet tall. The trunk has a brown, hairy appearance and grows up to a foot in diameter. As old fronds fall off, distinctive coin-shaped spots will form on the trunk.
