Fleuroselect Gold Medal winner 1982

Ever since the Telstar series of dianthus arrived on the scene, gardeners have been entranced and prizes have been flying—on both sides of the Atlantic. Here in America, Telstar Picotee won the All-America Selection, our highest award for a seed. In Europe, both Telstar Crimson and Telstar Mix (the same one we're offering here) won the Fleuroselect Gold Medal, an honor given only to a few seed varieties—ever. Telstar began a whole new breeding program for dianthus, and to our mind, it remains the absolute tops.

So what's the big deal? Well, Telstars combine two species of Dianthus: Sweet William (D. barbatus) and China Pinks (D. chinensis). This gives them both hardiness and floriferousness, not to mention superior color, fragrance, and branching. They bloom in both spring and fall (and right through summer in cooler areas). They're perennial, though we prefer to grow them as annuals because their first year is their best. And most of all, they're tough.

Telstar was bred specifically to put up with rough weather of all kinds. Heat, humidity, rain, wind, even drought—it's all water under the bridge for this mighty little dianthus. Where others stop blooming when spring gives way too abruptly to summer heat, Telstar shrugs it off and keeps opening new blooms. When late-afternoon summer thunderstorms leave others scraggly, waterlogged, and prone to mildew, Telstar only smells the sweeter. (Well, not really, but it does keep blooming.) And when fall arrives early, then lapses back into Indian Summer, then hits you with a cold snap, Telstar weathers the changes. Very few others can, and none as beautifully.

So let's look at these plants. The mix contains a nice variety of colors, including several of the famous picotee shades; all the colors complement one another with hues of pink, red, purple, and white, including many bicolors. The flowers are single, about an inch wide, and neatly pinked, as if someone had taken shears to their petal edges and notched them perfectly. The blooms sit atop needle-thin green leaves on very well-branched plants about 8 to 10 inches high and wide, and they will return in force if you shear the plants back by about 2 inches after the first wave of bloom.

Redolent of cloves, the blooms are great for cutting as well as for enjoyment in the garden or container. They are the perfect buttonhole flower (going to a wedding, christening, or graduation, anyone), and make lovely little nosegays for the breakfast table. You'll have flowers to spare, too, because Telstar approaches blooming as it does everything else: with over-the-top vigor.

Use Telstar in containers of all kinds as well as the sunny annual bed. It goes straight from spring into summer in most climates, and if planted out in fall from an indoor summer sowing, will outlast most other fall-blooming annuals. You will love this unstoppable performer.

Sow Telstar in a Bio Dome Seed Starter Kit or seed flat at about 70 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit, covering the seeds with a thin layer of soil and wrapping the flat in plastic wrap to increase the humidity. (If you're using the Dome, no problem; just drop one seed in each bio sponge and keep the dome on, vents closed, until germination.) The seeds should sprout in just a few days, at which time you can lower the temperature and remove the dome/plastic wrap for better air circulation. Transplant at about a month.

Telstar is going to become your dianthus of choice the very first season you grow it. Share with your gardening buddies and have fun finding new places to show off these little wonder plants.

Auto-Rolling Dog Ball - loud with a mystery filling.
I got this to entertain my high energy dog and she does like it, but I don't. The ball is incredibly loud and doesn't move around nearly as much as I had hoped. When your dog picks it up, it turn their mouth into an amplifier making it louder. It bounces/vibrates around more than rolling. Which is not what I expected, but seems to be engaging enough for more dog (but that doesnt take much). What I really dislike is there is no way on the exterior to know what mode you are in and the inside is full of grease. To charge it and to see the lights to identify what mode it is involves opening it and touching the grease covered insides. The lights don't seem to match the instructions when trying to switch modes. The light is supposed to stay on for 3s. It doesn't for either mode and immediately cycles through other colors making it more confusing. The exterior seems durable enough for a moderate chewer and I like the color and texture. At $15, it seems like a fair price, but I can't recommend this at any price point. I don't feel comfortable letting my dogs play with toys that could easily expose them to an unidentified grease. Any greased components should be sealed. Not somewhere I have to touch for normal operation and potentially leak.

Gentle vibrations and rolling
My sweet old man dog didnt know what to think of this at first. We introduced it to him without turning it on at first, like a regular ball. That was fine, he was good with that and he liked to go chasing it (its heavy because its mechanical so I wouldnt throw it, a light toss/roll is how we started). After we played that way a while we turned it on. At first he was confused as to why his toy was chasing him. It mostly vibrates and bops around a bit. But then my pup started chasing it and kicking it around like a little soccer ball and he LOVED THAT. A charge lasts quite a while too and if he doesnt play with it in for a few minutes it goes to sleep so its not just bouncing constantly and driving me crazy. My pup likes it and it gives me a rest from the constant throwing so I'm happy!

Keeps My Dog Entertained for Hours!
This auto-rolling dog ball has been a total game changer for keeping my dog busy and active! The second I turned it on, my dog was instantly curious and started chasing it all over the house. It moves and rotates in a really fun, unpredictable way that keeps their attention much longer than regular toys. I love that it helps with boredom relief, especially on days when we can’t get outside as much. It’s perfect for indoor play but also works great outside too. The material feels durable and holds up well against chewing, which is a must for my pup. The USB rechargeable feature is super convenient—no constantly replacing batteries—and it holds a charge long enough for multiple play sessions. I also appreciate that it’s easy to clean and has some water resistance, so I don’t have to worry too much about slobber or a little outdoor use. Overall, this is a fun, interactive toy that actually keeps dogs engaged and moving. Highly recommend for anyone with an energetic or easily bored pup!

Great toy!
Pattern Name: Carrot
"Dog toys by Dole? The banana people??" Yep, me too. My dog loves this toy. The plastic piece is a great texture for chewing. The stuffy is small enough for most puppies and will grow to medium sized dogs. The green of the carrot crinkles and they both wash up good. The stuffy has been through the wash many times. Good quality, durable toys.

The plastic is easy to chew through
Pattern Name: Carrot, Pattern Name: Carrot
Taking off one star on what would otherwise be a five-star product because dogs can chew off small plastic pieces fairly easily. Other than that, my dogs went wild for this toy and loved playing with it and chewing on it for hours. If your dog isn’t a heavy chewer, I’d definitely recommend it. Otherwise, close supervision is strongly advised. That said, I really like the other materials used, the crinkly fabric carrot top is especially fun and engaging for dogs. Overall, I think this would be an even better product if the material for the carrot base were made from a harder, more durable plastic.
