Othonna capensis, commonly known as Ruby Necklace or String of Rubies, is a beautiful and unique succulent . It’s prized for its colorful, trailing stems and easy-care nature, making it a favorite among succulent collectors and hanging basket enthusiasts.

Here’s a detailed overview 👇

🌿 Basic Description

  • Botanical Name: Othonna capensis
  • Common Names: Ruby Necklace, String of Rubies, Little Pickles
  • Family: Asteraceae
  • Origin: South Africa

🌈 Appearance

  • Stems: Long, slender, and trailing — can grow up to 2 feet (60 cm) long.
  • Color: The stems and leaves are green under low light, but turn vivid red, purple, or ruby-colored when exposed to bright sunlight (hence the name “Ruby Necklace”).
  • Leaves: Shaped like tiny beans or pickles — plump, elongated, and fleshy for water storage.
  • Flowers: Small, bright yellow daisy-like blooms, typically appear in spring or summer and sometimes throughout the year in warm climates.

🌞 Light Requirements

  • Bright, indirect light is ideal.
  • A few hours of direct sunlight (morning or late afternoon) brings out the ruby coloration.
  • Indoors: place near a south- or east-facing window.
  • Too little light = green leaves and leggy growth.
  • Too much harsh midday sun = leaf scorch.

💧 Watering

  • Water sparingly — it’s drought-tolerant.
  • Let the soil dry out completely between waterings.
  • Overwatering can lead to root rot, which is the most common issue.
  • During winter (dormant period), reduce watering frequency.

🪴 Soil & Potting

  • Use a well-draining succulent or cactus mix.
  • Add perlite or pumice to improve aeration.
  • Make sure the pot has drainage holes.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Prefers warm temperatures (65–80°F / 18–27°C).
  • Not frost-tolerant — protect from cold below 50°F (10°C).
  • Thrives in low humidity (typical indoor conditions are fine).

🌼 Propagation

Very easy to propagate:

  1. Take stem cuttings about 3–5 inches long.
  2. Let the cuttings dry for a day or two to callous over.
  3. Place in well-draining soil and mist lightly until roots form.
  4. Within a few weeks, new growth should appear.

🌱 Care Tips

  • Fertilize lightly in spring and summer with a diluted succulent fertilizer.
  • Trim occasionally to encourage fuller growth or to shape the plant.
  • Ideal for hanging baskets, window sills, or as ground cover in mild climates.

Happy dogs
Size: Whole Ears (Pack of 80)
I have two rescue dogs and one of them is a unrelenting 'I'm chewing everything in sight' pitbull. I've had her for a year and she is now three years old . I know this aggressive chewing will stop as she grows older but for now I find any snack that will keep her busy . I have bully sticks which are quite expensive and doesn't last as long as it should.I bought this 100 pack pig ears and of course they love it but it also takes her about the same amount of time to finish it as a 12 inch bully stick, which is a win in my book. These ears are cheaper than bully sticks and are healthier than rawhide chews . These pig ears come in different sizes but most of them are huge where I'm in need to search for a smaller one for my other dog since she is 50 lbs and not 80 lbs like my pitbull. If you need ones that are sliced smaller , then you're in luck because they also sell one with mixed whole and slices. I got the whole ears and I am very happy with the quality of them. It was sent in a sealed plastic bag within a box. Once opened there is no way to reseal them so be prepared to repackage or as I did, put them in a airtight container like the ones I use for their dog food. Hope this helps other dog lovers keep their doggos happy

Huge!
Size: Whole Ears (Pack of 60)
I always bought pig ears at Costco until they quit carrying them. My dogs were addicted at that point, and anything comparable was more than double the price. I ordered a few different brands on Amazon and they were either tiny, or the picture didn’t match what was delivered. I have a Rottweiler. He eats these like potato chips. I read reviews for these that were negative and was hesitant to buy them because of the negative reviews. My only complaint is that I also have a Basset Hound, and she buries these in my house because they’re too big for her to eat at one time.

💔My dogs are throwing up and diarrhea BLOOD!
Size: Whole Ears (Pack of 22)
Salmonella I have 5 dogs. On Thursday, July 17, I received a package of pig ears from this company. This was not the first time my dogs had pig ears but it was the first time I purchased from you. My dogs were each given a pig ear. Within 24 hours, all of my dogs were throwing up and diarrhea. By Saturday, all 5 of my dogs were throwing up straight blood and diarrhea straight blood!!! Puddles! It was horrifying and looked like a crime scene in my house!!! My husband and I were hysterical! My dogs were so weak and lethargic, and sick! 4 of my dogs are under 10lbs and were in the emergency vet getting an IV and fighting for life, as well as my 10 year old American Staff rescue who has a weak immune system because she fought heartworms a year and a half ago before we adopted her. It is currently Monday morning and our nightmare hasn't ended! My husband and I, both work, and have literally not slept since! 24 hours a day we are cleaning up after dogs - vomit, diarrhea, and tons of it! From each! Last night my smallest dachshund threw up 16 times in 15 minutes - on my bed, lap, floor, everywhere! Blood! We are torn- are lives are shattered! In the blink of an eye all because we thought we were spoiling our dogs and giving them a treat! Now they are fighting for life! We have spent thousands at the emergency vet for all of them! We still don't know if they are going to make it! We are so devastated and feel so helpless watching them! We try to console them but how do you console all 5 at once and what do you do when they don't understand & they are so weak and miserable and blood is coming out of their bodies faster than you can clean it! I think it is important for people to be aware! After researching, I found out that this company had a salmonella outbreak across 45 states in 2019.
