Sweet Lavender is not new—and that’s part of what makes it special. This hybrid dates back to the early 1800s, long before lavender was packaged and branded the way it is today. It was grown because it worked—because it handled heat, bloomed well, and smelled good.
It’s closely related to both Goodwin Creek Grey and the historic hybrid Lavandula × allardii. All three come from French lavender (L. dentata) and share its love of warmth and light. Sweet Lavender sits right between them in size—taller than Goodwin Creek Grey, shorter than × allardii.
The foliage is greenish gray with gently toothed edges, less woolly than its cousins. And the flowers—those are the real gift. They’re softer in look and sweeter in scent, closer to English lavender in fragrance and feel.
WHY WE LOVE GROWING IT
- Old, proven hybrid with a real history
- Sweeter scent than most French-type lavenders
- Handles heat and humidity well
- Blooms well in mild climates and indoors
- Beautiful balance of form and fragrance
This is the kind of lavender that bridges worlds—ornamental, fragrant, and practical.
HOW IT GROWS
- Plant type: Evergreen perennial
- Sun: Full sun
- Soil: Very well-drained soil
- Water: Moderate; never soggy
- Zones: 8–10
- Growth habit: Upright, open to semi-dense
Like its relatives, it wants sun, air, and drainage more than rich soil.
SIZE & BLOOM
- Height × Width: About 3–4 ft. × 3 ft.
- Foliage: Greenish gray with lightly toothed edges
- Flower color: Soft purple
- Fragrance: Sweet, gentle, closer to English lavender
- Bloom habit: Long season in warm climates
GROWING INDOORS
Sweet Lavender is one of the better lavenders for indoor bloom.
For winter flowers:
- Give at least 5 hours of direct sun daily
- South-facing windows are best
- Let soil dry slightly between waterings
- Warmth and airflow help
BEST USES
