Genie Magnolia (Magnolia x 'Genie')

Genie Magnolia (Magnolia x 'Genie'), is a compact deciduous flowering tree known for its deep burgundy to wine-purple blooms that open in mid spring. The flowers are upright and tulip-shaped, giving the plant a crisp, architectural look in bloom rather than a loose, sprawling display. Because it stays smaller than many magnolias, it is easy to fit into foundation plantings, courtyards, and tighter urban landscapes where you still want that classic magnolia moment. Planted where you see it from the house or along a main approach, Genie Magnolia creates a bold spring focal point without demanding a large footprint.

Distinctive Features

The standout trait is the saturated flower color, which can read as velvety burgundy and holds its richness well as the blooms open. Flowers are substantial for the size of the plant, and the upright form helps them stand out cleanly against the branch structure. After bloom, the plant leafs out into a neat green canopy with a naturally tidy habit that looks composed through summer. In good conditions it can also produce repeat flowering later in the season, adding another layer of interest beyond the main spring show.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun to part shade; best flowering in full sun, with light afternoon shade helpful in hotter sites.
  • Soil: Moist, well-drained, organic-rich soil; slightly acidic to neutral is ideal.
  • Water: Moderate; keep evenly moist during establishment and water during extended dry spells.
  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 5 to 9.
  • Habit: Deciduous small tree or large shrub with an upright to rounded form.
  • Mature Size: About 10 to 15 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Highlight in a front bed, courtyard, or near a patio where the dark flowers can be enjoyed up close.
  • Foundation Accent: Use as a refined spring-flowering anchor that stays appropriately scaled near the home.
  • Courtyard and Small Garden Tree: Fits smaller spaces while delivering dramatic flower color and a clean silhouette.
  • Mixed Border Feature: Place among shrubs and perennials for a strong spring accent, then let the green canopy carry the composition through summer.
  • Evergreen Contrast Planting: Pair with dark green hedges or conifers to make the burgundy blooms look even richer.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Water deeply and consistently the first one to two seasons; steady moisture supports bud development and flower quality.
  • Mulching: Maintain a 2 to 3 inch mulch layer over the root zone to protect shallow roots and stabilize soil moisture, keeping mulch off the trunk.
  • Fertilizing: Feed lightly in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer if needed, especially in lean soils.
  • Pruning: Prune sparingly after flowering to remove dead wood or refine shape; avoid heavy pruning, which can reduce flowering.
  • Site Protection: Choose a spot out of harsh wind and late frost pockets when possible to help protect buds and blooms.

Why Choose Genie Magnolia?

  • Rich Burgundy Flowers: Delivers a dramatic, saturated bloom color that stands out among spring flowering trees.
  • Compact Size: Provides magnolia impact in smaller landscapes and tighter planting areas.
  • Polished Bloom Form: Upright flowers create a clean, architectural look in spring.
  • Easy to Design With: Works beautifully with evergreens, stone, and contemporary plant palettes.
  • Season-Long Presence: Offers spring bloom impact and a tidy green canopy that holds its shape through the growing season.

If you want a smaller magnolia with bold, dark flower color and a refined habit, Genie Magnolia brings a memorable spring show and focal point presence to landscapes where space and style both matter.

Fantastic upgrade from my original stand. Base is a little bulky, but stand is versatile and sturdy.
Size: Single, Style: Free-Standing, Size: Single, Style: Free-Standing
Amazing value for this stand. I needed a stand with more degrees of freedom than the original one that came with my monitor, and this stand (which was inexpensive relative to the cost of the monitor) was a great purchase. The base of the stand is a little bulky/high, and the soft material on the bottom of it can rub off very easily if you let the stand catch the back edge of your desk. Otherwise though, the stand is extremely easy to install, and it provides far more degrees of freedom for rotation and translation than the original stand for my monitor. Now my monitor is sitting at a comfortable viewing angle closer to my desk tilted slightly upwards toward me. Just keep in mind that you have to tighten down the height and tilt adjustments (the things that would be affected by gravity). So, if you want to adjust those frequently, this stand might not be a great fit for you. That said, it does provide a hidden but easy-to-access spot to store the keys needed to loosen it up to make those adjustments. So, if you need to make those adjustments, you'll always have quick access to the necessary tools. Highly recommended for its price in particular.

A Solid Monitor Stand
Size: Single, Style: Free-Standing
This is an extremely sturdy monitor stand. Easily assembled in less than 20 minutes. Instructions were simple. The hex tools came with the stand, but you just need a Nr 2 Phillips Screwdriver for the bolts mounting the VESA plate to the monitor. Take note that this stand has a heavy base to hold larger/heavier monitors up to 22 lbs, but does not take a lot of space. I chose this variant so that it could handle my heavy 24-inch Planar monitor. The included cable management clip was a nice touch. Rotation and tilt feature moves easily and has decent range. I'm very happy with my purchase and it was available for overnight shipment in my region.

WALI Dual Monitor Stand: A Solid, Space-Saving Base Camp
Size: Dual, Style: Free-Standing
WALI Dual Monitor Stand: A Solid, Space-Saving Base Camp I needed to reclaim some real estate on my crowded desk, and this WALI freestanding mount did the trick. It's a straightforward, no-frills solution that holds my two 24-inch monitors securely and opens up a ton of space underneath. Assembly is intuitive, though having a second pair of hands is helpful when you're attaching the monitors to avoid any tipping. The all-metal construction feels sturdy and reliable. The adjustments are basic but effective—you can raise or lower both monitors together on the central pole and tilt or swivel them individually to get the angles just right. The included cable management clips are a nice touch for keeping things tidy. The key thing to understand with any freestanding mount is balance. If you extend the arms all the way out toward you, the whole unit can get top-heavy and want to tip forward. I keep my monitors positioned more centered over the heavy base, and it's perfectly stable. It's not meant for dramatic, extended poses. For the price, it's fantastic value. It doesn't have the infinite, fluid adjustability of high-end gas-spring arms, but it doesn't need to. It lifts your monitors, frees up your desk, and does its job without any fuss. Bottom Line: An excellent, budget-friendly way to lift two monitors and dramatically increase your usable desk space. Just be mindful of the center of gravity and don't expect ultra-flexible, independent positioning.

Easily supports a pair of 26" displays
Size: Dual, Style: Free-Standing
I have no complaints with this stand. It is not as nice as the Inland brand sold at MicroCenter, but it does its job. It beats the price of the MicroCenter one, thats for sure. It comes with all the hardware you might need, even long screws and bushings if you have a display that needs them. Assembly was quick. It comes mostly assembled anyway. You have to put the bottom on the post then attach the assembled arms to the post. Setting up can be a challenge but with help, its easy. After mounting the bracket on the back of the displays, you just slide them into the receiver on the arms. Once mounted, adjusting the position is simple, but can take a while as there are several joints which can be positioned to angle the displays as you like. The cord clips do an OK job of cord management, but the clips are not as good as the Inland ones. They do the job, but not as durable. I broke the one that goes on the post, but I tried getting it to hold a wad of wire. My fault. I recommend this stand.
