Overview
Euphorbia 'Zig Zag' is a succulent hybrid known for its angular, zig-zagging stems and bold striping. It is commonly sold under the name *Euphorbia pseudocactus* 'Zig Zag'. This cultivar is a cross involving *Euphorbia pseudocactus* and *Euphorbia grandicornis*, combining the distinctive stem shape and coloration of its parents. More compact than *E. grandicornis* and more structurally stable than *E. pseudocactus*, it makes a sculptural addition to dry gardens or container displays.

Description
This Euphorbia displays a compact, upright growth habit with prominently angled stems. The stems feature alternating, angular segments and are patterned with variegated striping reminiscent of *Euphorbia pseudocactus*. While smaller than *Euphorbia grandicornis*, it retains similar spines along the edges of the ribs. The overall form is sculptural and vertical, with multiple stems branching from the base over time. The plant’s structure is stable and less prone to collapsing than its close relatives.

Flowering
Small, bright yellow cyathia (the characteristic flower-like structures of Euphorbias) appear near the tips of the branches in spring. The flowers are not showy but add seasonal interest to the plant.

Origin and History
Euphorbia 'Zig Zag' is a cultivated hybrid. It results from a cross between *Euphorbia pseudocactus* and another hybrid of *E. pseudocactus* and *E. grandicornis*. The plant does not occur in the wild and was developed for ornamental use. It inherits traits from both parent species, including striping, angular stems, and spination.

Care and Cultivation
Euphorbia 'Zig Zag' prefers well-draining soil and a sunny location. While relatively drought-tolerant, it requires more frequent watering than some succulents, especially during warm months—about once a week when the top few inches of soil are dry. Water deeply but avoid letting the plant sit in wet soil. Fertilize monthly during the growing season with a diluted general-purpose fertilizer. In containers or poor soil, amending with organic matter at planting helps establishment. It is usually propagated by cuttings, though rooting can be slow due to the plant’s milky sap. Rooting hormone is recommended.

Frost Tenderness
Euphorbia 'Zig Zag' is hardy in USDA Zones 9b to 11b, tolerating temperatures as low as 25°F. Protection from frost is recommended in colder zones.

Uses in the Garden
This Euphorbia is suited to xeriscaping, rock gardens, and modern succulent arrangements. It serves as a vertical accent in dry or Mediterranean-style gardens and performs well in containers. While not typically used for medicinal purposes, it provides architectural interest and low-maintenance greenery in warm climates. Caution should be taken when handling, as the sap can be irritating to skin and eyes.

Wonderful and short introduction to plate tectonics for those with little background in Earth science or mathematics
Format: Paperback
Molnar does an excellent job explaining key elements of plate tectonics. His book is understandable even for those with little background in geology or geophysics. Molnar, an expert on mountain building, nicely explains how collisions of plates with continents atop cause mountain belts to form. He also questions the limitations of plate tectonics in explaining formation of such mountains. Understanding Molnar's very short book requires little mathematics. An ideal text for college science courses for non-science majors, and for those who want to understand the evolution of Earth's geological features and phenomena.

The book was an easy to read discussion of plate tectonics. The technical terms were easily understood and presented in an interest manner. Technically sound and entertaining is a winning combination for a science book! I wold recommend this book to anyone interested in the topic but is not a scientist in the field.
