Turn a plain rain gutter into a vertical garden, without bulky trellises or ground stakes.

Transform one residential downspout into a clean vertical growing space using tall HDPE mesh and offset mounting brackets designed for rain gutters.

The Scroll Trellis Downspout Trellis is a slim 9 ft × 4 in vine support that mounts directly to the outside of your downspout, creating one continuous 9 foot climbing surface while maintaining airflow behind the vine. It is ideal for narrow spaces where standard trellises will not fit.

One kit supports one downspout. Hardware included.

Description

This surface-mounted trellis kit uses UV-resistant black mesh and offset brackets to position vines in front of the downspout, not against it. The lightweight mesh stays cooler in the sun than metal supports, while the slim profile fits neatly beside gutters, corners, and tight side yards where standard trellises will not fit.

What’s included

• 9 feet of heavy-duty HDPE mesh (ships rolled and unrolls flat)
• 3 black composite mounting brackets sized for the mesh
• 3 mounting screws for standard residential metal and vinyl downspouts (2x3 and 3x4 profiles)
• 3 stainless steel zip ties for securing the mesh
• Simple installation guide with tips for clematis and other climbing vines

Installation & Mounting
  • Most gardeners complete installation in about 20 minutes using a drill/driver and household scissors.

    Step 1: Measure downspout
Measure the front face of your downspout where you plan to mount the trellis. Watch a short video of Step 1 »

    Step 2: Prep the kit
Untie the mesh and remove the loose black composite block, the small bag of button head fasteners, and the three stainless steel zip ties. Set aside.

Step 3: Mount the top bracket
Attach the top composite block to the front of the downspout just below the gutter seam. Position it so the two button head fasteners press against the downspout.
The included screw is self-drilling, so no pilot hole is needed.

Step 4: Attach and tension the mesh
Unroll the mesh. On the second composite block, remove the long screw and button head fasteners.
Insert the fasteners through the mesh and back into the block at your desired height.
Start the long screw lightly, pull the mesh straight, then tighten the block against the downspout and fully drive the screw.

Trim any excess mesh at the bottom with scissors.

    Step 5: Add mid support
Attach the third composite block to the mesh with button head fasteners, then secure it to the downspout with the screw.

Step 6: Secure with zip ties
Lace one stainless steel zip tie through the mesh across the front of each block, wrap around the downspout, and tighten to lock everything in place.

Will it Fit My Downspout?

• Trellis height: 108 inches (9 ft), can be trimmed shorter to match your downspout
• Trellis width: 4 inches, slim profile designed for standard residential downspouts
• Material: UV-resistant black HDPE mesh built for outdoor use
• Mounting: surface-mounted directly to the exterior face of the downspout using offset brackets
• Use: vertical vine support on rain gutter downspouts

Tips for Clematis & Vines

• Choose a clematis or vine that matches your sun exposure and hardiness zone.

• For clematis, select medium vigor varieties that typically spread 3 to 4 feet wide and grow 6 to 10 feet tall so they fill the trellis without overwhelming the downspout.

• Keep roots cool with mulch or low-growing plants at the base while allowing the vine to climb into full light.

• Gently guide new growth into the mesh rather than letting it wrap around the downspout. Once established, most vines will naturally grip the mesh on their own.

• For very tall growth, pinch or lightly prune tips when they reach the top of the trellis to encourage side shoots and fuller coverage.

No Downspout? Choose the Right Trellis.

The Downspout Trellis is designed specifically to mount directly onto the exterior surface of a rain gutter downspout.

If you want to support climbing plants on deck posts, porch columns, mailboxes, fences, or siding instead, the Scroll Trellis Narrow Trellis is the better option. It uses the same slim HDPE mesh design but mounts to flat surfaces rather than downspouts.

Not sure which one is right for your space? See how both kits compare on the “Why Scroll Trellis vs Other Trellises” page.

Choosing the right trellis ensures the strongest support and the cleanest vertical growth.

FAQs

Q: Does the trellis mount to the downspout or the wall?
A: The Downspout Trellis mounts directly to the exterior surface of a rain gutter downspout using offset brackets. Vines grow on the mesh in front of the pipe while airflow remains behind the plant.

Q: Will it fit standard residential downspouts?
A: Yes. It fits most common residential downspout sizes, including 2x3 and 3x4 profiles. The trellis mounts to the front face of the downspout rather than wrapping around it.

Q: Will the trellis block water flow or affect drainage?
A: No. The trellis attaches to the outside of the downspout and does not interfere with internal water flow or gutter function.

Q: Is the trellis one piece or modular?
A: The Downspout Trellis uses one continuous 9 ft HDPE mesh panel that installs as a single climbing surface on one downspout.

Q: Is a 4-inch wide trellis enough for climbing plants?
A: Yes. As vines climb and grip the mesh, their stems naturally spread outward, creating wide foliage coverage while the support stays slim.

Q: What plants work best with the Downspout Trellis?
A: Twining and gripping climbing vines work best, including clematis, honeysuckle, morning glory, mandevilla, peas, and black-eyed Susan vine. Compact roses can also be trained using garden ties.

Q: Does installation require drilling?
A: Yes. The offset brackets attach securely to the downspout using screws. No ground stakes or digging are required.

Fabulous!
Size: Left Facing, Size: Left Facing
I wish I had remembered to take a picture before I emptied my spice cabinet. Actually, on second thought, it would be embarrassing to share. I have two of these sturdy slide-out spice racks and could use another one. The racks were not hard to install, slide smoothly, look great, and my spices are in order! I was able to fit two of them on one side of my cabinet. I love the jars and labels. I use some spices much more than others so I put the matching labels on the large containers of these spices and keep them on the top shelf. I would definitely buy these again!

Clever Space Saver with a Few Caveats
Size: Left Facing
This spice rack system really helped bring order to the chaos in my cabinet, and it looks great doing it. The vertical design makes spices visible and accessible, and the included 20 jars and 801 labels are a huge bonus for customization. 🧩 Easy to Install, But Drawer Direction Matters Setup is fairly simple, but take note: the drawer only slides out in one direction depending on which version you buy (left or right facing). As a reviewer noted on page 6, it’s not reversible, which can be a headache if your layout changes or you order the wrong orientation. 🪛 Build Quality is Solid but Assembly Could Be Smoother The frame is sturdy and feels well-made, but you’ll need to screw the rails into the base — and the screws included aren’t the best. One user suggested bolts instead of screws (page 6), and I agree. A little more care here would elevate the overall experience. 🌶️ Jars and Labels Are Fantastic This is where the system really shines. The jars are glass with metal lids and fit perfectly in the rack. The label set includes multiples in several fonts, blank ones, and even a chalk marker — very thoughtful! ✅ Pros: Excellent use of vertical space for spice organization Looks polished and professional in any cabinet Tons of labels and customization options ❌ Cons: Drawer slide direction is fixed — not reversible Screw quality is mediocre Installation requires precision (and patience) Overall: This is a well-designed and space-saving spice rack that delivers on organization and aesthetic. If you're mindful of the fixed drawer direction and take your time during install, it's a great buy for transforming messy cabinets into a neat, labeled setup.

Great solution to a crowded cabinet
Size: Left Facing, Size: Left Facing
This kit is a game changer. Saves a ton of space in the cupboard, and although there is some "flex" when you pull it out, it really is very stable and holds up well against frequent use. It is super easy to find the spice you're looking for with the easy to read labels, and I think they have a designated label for just about every spice imaginable. Regardless of what cuisine you cook, I think you'll be able to organize your collection in a really aesthetic, high visible way, while reclaiming some cupboard space.

Love it! Can’t wait to buy a second one!
Size: Left Facing, Size: Left Facing
Worth every penny!! This rack is pricy, but it’s awesome. Definitely wish the price was a little better, but I still plan on buying a second one to fit more of my spices. Super easy to install and the glide feature is really smooth. Bottles and lids are quality material and overall really pretty design. Love that it comes with TONS of spice label options for every spice you could imagine! Fit in my standard depth cabinet that is 12” deep (and I have inset cabinet doors and there was still plenty of room for it). You can easily pull it out and read the labels.

Aesthetic & Functional
Size: Left Facing
Good use of vertical space. It feels very secure and sturdy once mounted. It comes with everything you need, there’s a label for every spice and variation of that spice you can think of (different labels for the same spice but whole vs ground) and plenty of jars, with a few extra. Very well thought out. The tops were also standard enough to fit some of my existing spice jars so I didn’t even need to transfer those ones I just swapped lids and/or added a label. I previously had a different pull out spice rack with two flat shelves but it was a pain to find a specific spice without moving some out of the way, and it held maybe half as many jars as this one. This is an easy organization project that will free up a ton of horizontal cabinet space and makes finding spices while cooking significantly easier. If you do want to use your existing jars, make sure they have a flat side, as cylinder shaped jars roll around a bit when you slide it out. I just transferred my spices with round jars into the provided jars so wasn’t an issue for me! Really great value, especially considering how much the kit comes with!
