Anthurium luxurians

Anthurium luxurians is a Colombian foliage Anthurium with thick, deeply bullate leaves that develop a sculpted, almost quilted surface as they mature. The plant grows from a short, sturdy stem and carries its leaves on long petioles, so each blade has space to show its raised venation, glossy texture and dark green surface.

Young leaves often open softer in colour before hardening into a darker, firmer blade. Mature foliage feels substantial and coriaceous, with raised sections and shadowed depressions across the blade. In a pot, Anthurium luxurians stays centred around its crown, gradually adding heavier leaves with deeper surface relief.

What stands out on Anthurium luxurians

  • Growth habit: Short-stemmed, terrestrial Anthurium with a clustered crown.
  • Leaf texture: Strongly bullate blades with a thick, leathery feel.
  • Leaf shape: Ovate to narrowly ovate foliage with a lobed base and pointed tip.
  • Surface character: Glossy dark green upper leaves with paler undersides.
  • Pot growth: Slow, steady growth into a dense foliage plant with heavy leaves.

Leaf form, origin and growth behaviour

Anthurium luxurians is native to Colombia, where it grows in wet tropical conditions. It grows as a terrestrial Anthurium with short, stout stems, erect-spreading petioles and large, pendent blades. The thick leaf surface is bullate, with raised areas between the veins giving mature leaves their rugged, dimensional look.

In cultivation, this species needs a stable root zone, steady moisture and an airy substrate. Thick leaves make each new flush easy to notice, and growth usually develops at a deliberate pace. A coarse mix reduces stagnant moisture around the base and gives the heavier petioles a firmer root anchor.

Anthurium luxurians care guide

  • Light: Give bright filtered light. Shield the leaves from direct midday sun, which can scorch the raised blade surface.
  • Watering: Keep the substrate lightly and evenly moist, then water again once the upper layer has started to dry. The mix should never stay saturated.
  • Substrate: Use a chunky Anthurium mix with bark, coco chips, perlite, pumice and a moisture-retentive organic fraction. The roots need both air and consistent hydration.
  • Drainage: Choose a pot with open drainage. Use decorative outer pots only when excess water can drain fully from the nursery pot.
  • Humidity: Aim for 60–80% relative humidity with gentle airflow. This helps new leaves unfurl with fewer creases and reduces dry-edge stress.
  • Temperature: Maintain a warm range around 20–28 °C. Growth slows in cool conditions, especially when the substrate also stays wet.
  • Feeding: Feed with a weak balanced fertiliser while the plant is actively producing roots and leaves. Rinse accumulated mineral salts from the pot when buildup becomes visible.
  • Repotting: Repot when the root system fills the pot or the mix has broken down. Move up only one pot size to keep moisture easier to control.
  • Propagation: Divide only when the plant has a clear offset or multiple growth points. Single-crown plants are best left to size up.
  • Mineral substrates: Semi-hydro or mineral-heavy setups can suit established plants if warmth, oxygen and steady nutrient availability are maintained.

Likely issues on Anthurium luxurians

  • Soft yellowing leaves: Check for a cold, wet root zone or compacted substrate. Improve drainage and let the upper mix dry slightly before watering again.
  • Crisped new growth: Low humidity, dry air movement or irregular watering can interrupt leaf expansion. Stabilise moisture and raise ambient humidity.
  • Brown leaf margins: Review watering pattern, fertiliser strength and root health. Salt buildup can show quickly on thick Anthurium leaves.
  • Water-soaked spots: Isolate the plant, keep leaves dry and improve airflow. Anthuriums can be vulnerable to bacterial spotting in warm, wet conditions.
  • Slow growth: Check light, warmth and root condition before increasing fertiliser. This species naturally builds size gradually.

Anthurium luxurians growth notes

The heavy, textured leaves are easiest to maintain when the plant is kept stable. Repeated changes in moisture, light or temperature can show as uneven leaf expansion. Wipe dust gently with a soft damp cloth, holding the blade from underneath so the petiole stays secure.

Anthurium luxurians home placement

Anthurium luxurians should be kept away from children and animals that may chew plants. Like other Anthuriums, it contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes. Wear gloves when dividing or cutting the plant if your skin is sensitive.

Anthurium luxurians name meaning

The accepted botanical name is Anthurium luxurians Croat & R.N.Cirino, in the family Araceae. The genus name Anthurium joins Greek elements for “flower” and “tail”, a reference to the spadix. The species epithet luxurians means luxuriant or abundant, fitting the heavy leaf texture and rich surface of mature plants.

Anthurium luxurians develops thick, deeply bullate Colombian foliage with glossy raised surfaces, darker mature colour and slow-building crown growth.

For water flossers but can be used otherwise!
I misunderstood the product description and thought these were concentrated mini-mouthwash packets. They are actually an additive intended to pop into a water flosser, like using mint flavored floss instead of plain. I pitched my water flosser long ago but gave these a try as a concentrated regular mouthwash. I like it! The box contains a really cute fish-shaped packet. You snap off the end, or "tail" section, and be careful not to let it splash. Mix with a little water and you have a mouthwash. For travel, this is really convenient. I take a mini-mouthwash but am always worried about it leaking or TSA giving me grief. This would be a good option to have on hand. It's not particularly strong or a heavy alcohol based one like Listerine, but it did leave my breath feeling very fresh.

A Fluoride‑Free Toothpaste the Whole Family Honestly Loves
Size: 4 Ounce (Pack of 3), Set name: E. Orange Cream, Watermelon Mint, Strawberry Mango
We’ve been using Boka Fluoride Free Toothpaste with Nano‑Hydroxyapatite for a while now, and it has easily become a staple in our household. Finding a toothpaste that is both clean and effective and something my daughter actually enjoys using has always been a challenge, but this one truly checks every box. First, the flavors deserve special mention. We’ve tried Orange Cream and Watermelon Mint, and my daughter absolutely loves both. There’s no struggle at brushing time anymore, no complaints, no resistance. She actually looks forward to brushing her teeth, which as any parent knows, is a huge win. The flavors are fun but not overpowering, and they don’t have that harsh or medicinal taste found in many toothpastes, especially “kid-friendly” ones. From a parent’s perspective, what really sold us is the fact that Boka is fluoride‑free and made with clean ingredients. We love knowing that we’re not exposing her to unnecessary chemicals while still supporting good oral hygiene. The inclusion of nano‑hydroxyapatite gives us peace of mind as well, it feels like a modern, thoughtful alternative that aligns with what we want for our family. The toothpaste feels gentle, non‑gritty, and leaves mouths feeling smooth and clean without dryness or irritation. The texture is another pleasant surprise. It’s creamy and smooth, easy to spread on the toothbrush, and doesn’t foam excessively. Both flavors leave a fresh, clean feeling afterward without any lingering bitterness. Even as adults, we genuinely enjoy using it, which says a lot, we often find ourselves reaching for it instead of our usual toothpaste. Overall, Boka Toothpaste has made brushing easier, more enjoyable, and more reassuring for our family. My daughter loves every flavor we’ve tried, and we love knowing we’re using a product that’s clean and fluoride‑free without compromising quality. If you’re looking for a toothpaste that works for both kids and adults and one that finally ends brushing battles,, I can’t recommend this one enough.

Toddler Approved!
Size: 4 Ounce (Pack of 1), Set name: A. Strawberry Mango
I never thought I’d describe toothpaste as “fun,” but here we are... I bought this Boka strawberry mango flavor for my toddler — I figured he would enjoy this over a mint flavor because what kid enjoys a harsh, burning feeling? It smells fruity and tastes like a smoothie. We are still practicing brushing but this toothpaste helps encourage the importance of daily teeth maintenance. Also, I love that it’s fluoride-free and I am not worried if it's swallowed. It is pricier than I would prefer, but it has lasted so long that I've came to terms that it's worth the cost.

Made in America nano-hydroxyapatite Toothpaste that's Well Worth Buying.
Size: 4 Ounce (Pack of 3), Set name: E. Orange Cream, Watermelon Mint, Strawberry Mango
This review is pretty much the same as the one I wrote for the Boka Coco Ginger. Boka Toothpaste is just that good. I've been using the Japanese brand Apagard Premio toothpaste for a couple of years now and recently I noticed this Boka toothpaste while looking for alternatives that wold be less costly. I've been using this toothpaste since the end of May, 2025. I wish they would sell it in larger tubes. Boka Toothpaste is very mild and makes brushing your teeth better. It doesn't have that harsh mint flavor which with most toothpastes feels like it's burning your mouth. It comes in multiple flavors and when you're done brushing your teeth, there is no need to rinse your mouth as it is a safe toothpaste to use. After having used it for a few days, I decided that I will keep using the Boka brand from now on. I just wish that most stores would carry this toothpaste instead pf selling all those major brands which are full of fluoride. Did a bit of research and found that Boka Toothpaste has the same percentage of nano-hydroxyapatite as Apagard Premio which is 10%. So that means that Boka Toothpaste is just as good if not better. No Fluoride No Harsh burning Mint Flavor Safe to shallow Multiple flavors 10% nano-hydroxyapatite Keeps your teeth Strong And one thing I've noticed is nano-hydroxyapatite makes your teeth less sensitive by rebuilding your tooth enamel I ordered four flavors, Watermelon Mint, Strawberry Mango, Orange Cream and Coco Ginger. So far, I've tried the Coco Ginger and I was surprised at how mild it was and it didn't have the sharp taste that ginger usually has. It is good and I enjoy it. I also tried the Orange Cream which was good. I'm looking forward to trying the other flavors. The Orange Cream I'm sure my wife will like if I can get her to try it. But she can be very stubborn at times. I see there are some other flavors which I intend to try such as the Cinnamint, Cucumber Dill, Lemon Lavender and Strawberry Basil. Not sure if I should try the Ela Mint as I don't know how strong or mild the mint will be. I'm sure that if places such as Walmart brick & mortar stores sold this toothpaste, that it would sell really well.

Favorite toddler toothpaste
Size: 4 Ounce (Pack of 1), Set name: A. Strawberry Mango
I bought this for my 18month old who has all his teeth already. It works great. The smell is pleasant, the taste isn’t harsh, and the texture isn’t as thick as most toothpastes - perfect for a toddler. I’ve been using this for a couple of months now and have not noticed any irritation. He enjoys it about as much as any 18 month will, ha! It’s just as effective as fluorinated toothpaste. You get what you pay for. It’s a big tube!
