Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegatum'

Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegatum' is a variegated spider plant cultivar with arching green leaves edged in white to cream. It grows from a central rosette and develops a graceful cascading outline as the leaves lengthen and mature flower stems begin to carry small plantlets.

The pale margins create a ribboned edge along each strap-shaped leaf, with a green centre running through the rosette. Mature plants can produce thin arching stems with small white flowers, followed by young plantlets that root easily once they form small root initials.

Classic striped spider plant traits

  • Variegated spider plant cultivar with green centres and pale leaf margins
  • Arching rosette growth with narrow strap-shaped leaves
  • Produces small white flowers and hanging plantlets on mature stems
  • Fleshy roots store moisture and fill containers strongly over time
  • ASPCA-listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs

Botanical origin and variegated growth

Chlorophytum comosum belongs to the Asparagaceae family and is native across parts of tropical Africa into southern Africa. The species grows as a perennial with tufted leaves, fleshy roots, and flowering stems that can carry both flowers and plantlets.

'Variegatum' is a cultivated variegated form of Chlorophytum comosum. Its green-centred leaves with pale margins create a clear striped effect, especially once the leaves arch over the pot. The plant’s thick roots help it cope with short dry phases and can fill a container quickly during active growth.

Care for arching variegated growth

  • Light: Set in bright indirect light or gentle morning/evening sun. Strong midday sun can scorch the pale margins and leave dry marks.
  • Watering: Give a thorough soak once the upper substrate has dried, then let the pot drain fully. The thick roots cope well when the upper substrate dries before the next soak.
  • Substrate: Choose a well-drained houseplant mix with enough openness for thick roots. Perlite, fine bark, or pumice helps prevent compaction.
  • Temperature: Maintain temperatures above 15°C for steady growth. Cool wet conditions can damage the fleshy roots.
  • Humidity: Regular room humidity is suitable. Dry heated air can contribute to tip browning, especially on older leaves.
  • Feeding: Apply a mild fertiliser during spring and summer. A light schedule keeps growth steady and limits salt stress in the root zone.
  • Repotting: Repot when roots press firmly against the pot or water runs through too quickly. Divide crowded clumps during repotting if desired.
  • Pruning: Remove dry tips, spent flower stems, and old plantlets with clean scissors. Keep the central crown clear and dry after watering.
  • Propagation: Root plantlets in substrate once small roots are visible, or divide mature clumps with several growth points.
  • Summer outdoors: Warm sheltered shade suits seasonal placement. Acclimate gradually and bring indoors before cool nights return.

Tips, roots and runner signals

  • Brown tips: Check water quality, watering pattern, dry air, and fertiliser salts. Low-mineral or rainwater can help where tap water causes repeated tip burn.
  • Yellowing and soft roots: Usually points to a wet, compacted root zone. Check drainage and repot into a more open mix if needed.
  • Scorched pale margins: Move the plant out of direct sun and trim only fully dry tissue.
  • Few plantlets: Younger plants often need more time before sending out runners. Very rich feeding can also favour leaves over plantlet production.

Offsets and repotting signs

Chlorophytum comosum can fill a pot with thick white storage roots. A crowded root system can reduce water retention in the substrate, so a plant that dries unusually fast may be ready for repotting or division.

Pet-safe status and trailing leaves

Chlorophytum comosum appears on ASPCA’s non-toxic list for cats and dogs. Fibrous leaves can still trigger vomiting after chewing, so keep long leaves and plantlets away from animals that nibble houseplants.

Botanical name and cultivar note

The accepted species name is Chlorophytum comosum (Thunb.) Jacques, in the family Asparagaceae. The genus name Chlorophytum comes from Greek roots meaning green or yellow-green plant. The species epithet comosum means furnished with a tuft, referring to the tufted rosette of leaves. 'Variegatum' is the pale-edged variegated spider plant cultivar.

Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegatum' forms arching striped leaves and plantlet-producing runners from a tufted rosette.

Probably going to replace all the pillows in the house with these
Color: White, Size: King (Pack of 2)
These pillows are just about perfect. They have to be the best pillow for the money out there at least. I didn't even know that this kind of pillow existed but was asking Google Gemini what kind of pillow would best suit my list of needs and this is what we came up with. - High loft for comfortable side sleeping, but can be reduced by removing foam to be less high - Gives initially, but stays at that new same thickness throughout the night b/c it's memory foam chunks - Doesn't feel lumpy because it has the 1cm outer pillow layer that covers the memory foam pieces I'm 6/3" 210lbs and after a couple nights of adjusting I found that removing about 1 gallon ziploc of foam chunks from each pillow was about perfect. I saved the foam in ziplocs in case I change my mind. They come REALLY loaded at first so should fit literally anyone with some adjusting. It was definitely too big the first two nights until I got it just right.

Hard As Rock When Cold
Color: White, Size: Standard (Pack of 2)
These are good pillows except they get hard as a rock when the temps go below 65F and take 10-20 minutes to warm up at bedtime. Not ideal where the winters are colder or for someone with cervical spine issues.

LUXURIOUS, just like it says
Color: White, Size: Queen (Pack of 2)
I used My Pillows for years which needed constant fluffing throughout the night until they just became useless. Since they became useless, I would always wake in the middle of the night with terrible headaches and my head would be sore all over, throbbing like a boil. I couldn’t stand anything to touch my any part of my head while these headaches occurred. One night almost a week ago I was awake in pain and couldn’t sleep. I started googling for a solution, a pillow that would support a human head, basically a bowling ball. After several products which kept sending me to Amazon, I stumbled upon this pillow. I read all of the reviews. Many compared it to a “luxurious hotel pillow”. So I waited and got them within less than 48 hours. It was a thin box so I wasn’t expecting much. They were vacuum sealed, I opened them and allowed about an hour for them to fully expand. They were comprised of memory foam and down alternative like “luxurious hotel pillows”. They were heavy too. I tried to fluff it for maximum feel. It was extremely firm and I wasn’t able to actually fluff or reform it in any manner really. I could feel the down alternative filling surrounding this semi hard center ( the memory foam I guess) and I fluffed as much as possible. I had difficulty getting it into my pillow case, which was fine to me. It just made me anticipate this perfect looking pillow. I had been suffering with these headaches due to inferior pillows, I couldn’t wait. I laid down and put my bowling ball head on it! It completely supported my head. I normally like my pillow to conform around my neck and shoulders to allow a straight alignment with my head. My head was slightly up, but hey this felt great!!! I could feel the down alternative filler cushioning my head with the firm memory foam in the middle. I could not wait to try it that night. Night comes and I’m excited to see if I can sleep through the night finally without waking with those terrible headaches. I slept almost all through the night except for going to the bathroom once!! And my head wasn’t hurting nor did it feel like a boil!! I was ecstatic to say the least. I know there are people just like me searching for relief. If you can tolerate a firm pillow you can’t go wrong with these pillows. You get two for a great price! I just wish I hadn’t wasted hundreds on My Pillows for all my bedrooms a few months ago. I will be replacing all the pillows in my home with these WONDERFUL pillows!!!

Really Happy With These Pillows!
Color: Blue, Size: Queen(2 Pack)-20'*30'
**Review: Really Happy With These Pillows!** I purchased these pillows and couldn’t be happier! First – they’re cool on *both* sides—finally! I’m not sure why that’s so rare (probably to cut costs), but these actually have cooling material on both sides, and it works really well. Second – the venting around the center helps keep them from getting hot at night. A nice touch that makes a difference for hot sleepers. However, the third feature is the best: the filling. Like many adjustable pillows, you can add or remove the fill, and these come with a small extra bag. The base amount was just right for most people. I had to remove some for my wife but added a bit more to mine. The fill itself is excellent—soft but supportive. You sink into it, but don’t hit bottom. These pillows also have a good weight to them, so they don’t feel cheap. They fluff up great and seem very well made. I followed the recommended dryer run when I first received them and had no odor issues at all. Highly recommend!
