A curious object, the Wardian case. For a time, the Victorians became obsessed with gathering ferns from communal woods—as well as from distant, exotic lands. Tall as a man, the glass Wardian cases were both decorative and protective, separating one's most treasured specimens from the choking pollution of the city's factories.
