Orbea variegata, commonly known as the Starfish Plant, is a captivating succulent admired for its unique, star-shaped flowers adorned with intricate maroon speckles. Native to South Africa’s Western Cape, this plant adds an exotic touch to any collection and is relatively easy to care for, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced gardeners.

Scientific Name
Orbea variegata (L.) Haw.

Previously classified as Stapelia variegata, this species belongs to the Apocynaceae family. The reclassification to the genus Orbea reflects updated botanical understanding.

Common Name(s)
Starfish Plant, Starfish Cactus, Carrion Flower, Toad Cactus, Toad Plant

Origin
Native to the coastal belt of the Western Cape, South Africa, where it thrives in well-drained soils and sunny conditions.

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight but should be protected from intense midday sun to prevent scorching. Inadequate light may lead to leggy growth and reduced flowering.

Water
As a succulent, it requires minimal watering. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot. During the winter months, reduce watering frequency as the plant’s growth slows.

Humidity
Adapted to arid environments, it prefers low humidity levels. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues, especially in more humid climates.

Soil
Plant in a well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix. Adding perlite or coarse sand can enhance drainage. Repotting every 2–3 years in the spring helps refresh the soil and provides space for growth.

Food
Fertilize sparingly during the active growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced, water-soluble fertilizer formulated for succulents. Avoid fertilizing during the dormant winter period.

Temperature
Thrives in temperatures between 18–26°C. It is not frost-tolerant and should be protected from temperatures below 10°C. In cooler climates, it is best grown indoors or in a greenhouse.

Pet-safe
Non-toxic to pets and humans, making it a safe choice for households with animals.

Sprouts Top Tips
To encourage blooming, provide ample light and avoid overwatering. The distinctive flowers emit a faint carrion-like scent, attracting pollinators like flies. While the odor is generally mild, placing the plant in a well-ventilated area can minimize any discomfort.

Extras
The Starfish Plant may produce seed pods after flowering. If propagation is desired, seeds can be collected and sown in a suitable succulent mix. Alternatively, stem cuttings can be taken during the growing season for propagation.

Did You Know?
Despite its common names like “Starfish Cactus” and “Carrion Flower,” Orbea variegata is not a true cactus. Its star-shaped flowers, often speckled with maroon, can reach up to 8 cm in diameter and may have a faint carrion smell to attract pollinating insects.

GREAT FOR TOUGH CHEWERS!!!
Color: Squeaky Corn Dog Toys
AMAZING FOR TOUGH CHEWERS!!! I did NOT buy this toy with the intentions of it lasting longer than the usual couple of hours for chew toys and tug toys for my three pits (I really only bought it because my puppy likes to chomp when I scratch her booty and corn shaped toys make it look like she is “corn cobbing” the kernels right off). I don’t know if it’s the kernel design or what….but my tough chewers have not been able to make a dent!! And that is NOT from lack of trying!! They usually get through even the toughest toys within a DAY at the most of me giving them to them. I usually buy a few, so they can have at least a few days worth of fun. With this toy, they have tried even harder! It’s almost like it is not personal…because they can’t get through this one! Haha The string part didn’t stand a chance. In fact, I cut that off within an hour. It was short and hard to hold on to. The threads came apart pretty quickly. I cut that part off. But the corn part?!?! I wish ALL toys were made out of that texture!! I am gobsmacked that the cob is still intact, with each and every kernel still in place!! If you have a tough chewer…give this one a shot! I am ordering two more right now!! So they can each have their own ear!

Cute but not Durable
Color: Squeaky Corn Dog Toys
It’s a very cute dog toy but for it being labeled for “aggressive chewers” I thought it would last longer than 3 days here.. I now have small chunks of “corn” all over my house and had to throw this toy away.

My dog loves these
Color: Squeaky Corn Dog Toys
I have a healer and he loves his corn. He does go through them every couple months but he’s a very aggressive chewer. He mostly loves to play catch with them. I have ordered many of these.

Kind of hilarious
Color: Squeaky Corn Dog Toys
I bought this for my golden puppy during peak teething time, and she showed no interest for 2 more months before becoming obsessed with it. It squeaks pretty loud & she appears to enjoy that. She also carries it while running by the rope end and flails it around to play lol. Worth it.

Really nice toy, my dog loved it until it broke, really good for frenchies! It’s a great cheap toy but the knots get chewed through.
