What sets Hardy Water Lilies apart from Tropical Water Lilies? Hardy water lilies and tropical water lilies exhibit distinct characteristics due to their origins and environmental preferences. Here's a comparison:

  1. Origin and Climate Preference:

    • Hardy Water Lilies: Most hardy water lilies have their roots in cooler regions of the Northern Hemisphere. They can withstand severe frost as long as their rhizomes (crown/root stocks) remain unfrozen. It's important to note that there are no native hardy water lilies in Australia.
    • Tropical Water Lilies: Tropical water lilies thrive in warmer climates. They produce flowers that rise significantly above the water surface, typically reaching heights of around 30cm. These lilies are known for their vibrant flowers, which can range from pinks, reds, whites, and yellows to even purples and blues.
  2. Flower Position and Colors:

    • Hardy Water Lilies: Their flowers tend to float on the water surface or hover just above it. They come in various colors, including apricots, pinks, reds, whites, and yellows. Some hardy water lilies are known as "changeable" as their flower colors can shift.
    • Tropical Water Lilies: Tropical water lilies produce flowers that stand upright above the pond water. Their flowers can also display a wide range of colors, such as pinks, reds, whites, yellows, purples, and blues.
  3. Leaf Characteristics:

    • Hardy Water Lilies: Typically, the leaves of hardy water lilies have smooth, rounded edges.
    • Tropical Water Lilies: In contrast, tropical water lilies produce leaves with toothed or scalloped edges.

Now, let's delve into the key factors influencing the successful flowering of hardy water lilies:

  1. Flowering Performance:

    • Hardy Water Lilies: Flowering performance varies among different varieties. Some may produce only a few flowers per month, while others can bloom frequently. Varieties with white and pale pink flowers tend to produce fewer blooms. Some may take time to flower and require the formation of a rhizome colony before they do.
  2. Day Length:

    • Hardy Water Lilies: The length of the day is a significant factor influencing flowering. In regions with greater day length variations, like southern Australia, flowering often coincides with the equinox when day and night lengths are equal. This typically occurs from late September to late March. In tropical areas where day lengths remain more constant, flowering can start earlier and extend over several months.
  3. Temperature:

    • Hardy Water Lilies: Flowering in hardy water lilies typically begins when water temperatures rise above 16-18°C. Some red-pink varieties may be susceptible to petal burn at temperatures exceeding 32°C. Varieties adapted to colder climates may slow down or stop flowering during hot summer months.
  4. Plant Size and Vigor:

    • Hardy Water Lilies: Larger plants tend to produce more flowers. It's recommended to plant hardy water lilies in containers of at least 20cm in diameter to allow for healthy root development. Vigorous growth is essential for optimal flower production. Using slow-release fertilizer tablets can promote healthy growth and flowering.

In summary, while hardy water lilies and tropical water lilies have differences in origin, appearance, and environmental preferences, successful flowering in hardy water lilies depends on factors like day length, temperature, plant size, and vigor. Understanding these factors can help gardeners cultivate these beautiful aquatic plants effectively.

A Beta Worth Rooting For
Format: Kindle
In Spare, Violet Fox flips the omegaverse on its head, giving us a Beta heroine determined to make her mark. Joining the Beta Trials to support her sick father, she's thrown into a pack that doesn't want her, especially the possessive Alphas. But here's the twist: their sweet Omega turns out to be her scent match. Cue the angst, forbidden tension, and a slow-burn romance that will make your heart ache in the best way. Violet Fox delivers an emotional, refreshing take on the genre, proving Betas aren't "spares." They're stars.

Beta, Alpha, Omega oh my!
Format: Kindle
Omegas are precious and given to Alphas & their packs... but the Betas want in too. To this end, the Beta government is rolling out its trial of assigning a Beta to each Alpha-Omega pack. But forcing a Beta into a pack where they are not wanted will not end well... Of course, no one expected the Omega to fall for the assigned Beta. Great read and cliffhanger

A familiar story, just with…..less.
Format: Kindle
So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.

Baby bumps and bodyguards
Format: Kindle
Dark, emotional, and unexpectedly tender, Not Ready is an omegaverse romance that delivers found family feels, fierce protectiveness, and a very pregnant heroine who refuses to break. Vale’s on the run from a stalker, but lands in the arms of three private security alphas, cue the swoony tension, fake marriage twist, and slow-burn heat. It’s a little gritty, a little soft, and a whole lot addictive. If you love protective alphas, high stakes, and heroines with quiet strength, this one’s a must-read.
