Iconic, Hardy State Tree of Florida

Common Names: Sabal Palm, Cabbage Palm, Palmetto Tree, Sabal Palmetto, Cabbage Palmetto
Family: Arecaceae
Origin: Southeastern United States (Florida, Georgia, South Carolina), the Caribbean

The Sabal Palm (Sabal palmetto), also known as the Cabbage Palm, is an iconic tree of the southeastern United States, particularly in Florida, where it serves as the state tree. This hardy palm is well-known for its resilience to salt, wind, drought, and even brief periods of flooding, making it an excellent choice for coastal landscapes and urban settings. The Sabal Palm is an evergreen, fan-leaved palm that can grow up to 40-50 feet tall, providing shade, beauty, and habitat for wildlife. The tree also has a long history of use in traditional medicine and food, with its edible "heart" known as the "cabbage" being a prized delicacy in some cultures.

Distinctive Features, Uses, and Historical Value

Foliage: The Sabal Palm features fan-shaped, deeply cut fronds that can grow up to 6 feet long. These fronds create a lush, full canopy that adds a tropical feel to any landscape.

Trunk: The trunk is often covered with the remnants of old leaf bases (known as "boots") unless they are removed for a smooth look. Over time, the trunk develops a unique texture that adds character to the tree.

Flowers and Fruit: The tree produces small, creamy-white flowers in the summer, followed by dark, pea-sized fruits that attract birds and wildlife.

Cabbage Heart: The edible "heart" of the Sabal Palm is known as the "cabbage," traditionally harvested and eaten in salads or cooked dishes, though removing the heart can kill the tree. Historically, indigenous peoples and early settlers used the Sabal Palm for food, medicine, and building materials.

Ornamental and Practical Uses

Sabal Palms are highly valued in landscaping due to their ability to tolerate a wide range of conditions, including high winds, salt spray, and drought, making them ideal for coastal areas and urban environments. Their tall, stately appearance adds elegance to gardens, parks, and cityscapes. Additionally, the tree provides habitat and food for various wildlife species, including birds and insects. While the "cabbage" heart is edible, harvesting it requires cutting down the tree, making it less commonly used today.

Best facial sunscreen I have used
Coola makes the best facial sunscreen, and I have tried many brands previous to using Coola. The texture is light and creamy without being oily, absorbing well and leaving no white residue. It does not clog my pores and nor cause those white bumps that last for months. Coola sunscreen works well to protect my skin from sunburn and from making more freckles and dark spots. It has no perfumy fragrance, much to my relief. Once it has dried, I can apply concealer or powder over it. No oily streaks or caking of other make-up so I have no excuse to avoid wearing this sunscreen every day. I have recommended Coola facial sunscreen to my friends who had laser dermabrasion. Their skin is more sensitive to both perfumed chemicals and sun exposure, and they have given good reports too.

Pricey, but worth it.
Coola products were included in a swag bag for a work vacation at a resort & I’ve not looked back. (The smell of the body spray sunscreen made me wish I could eat it, tbh.) This product has become my daily sunscreen as it’s the only one I’ve tried that doesn’t cause my skin to break out. I love the natural ingredients in their products AND that it doesn’t add to reef barrier breakdown. I only wish the brand wasn’t so pricey, but the benefits are worth it to me.

Terrific sunscreen!
I found out about the Sun screen from a youtuber who does Amazon favorites videos. At first, I thought she was nuts for advertising a $32 sun screen especially for the size it is. I really wanted an everyday sun screen that wasn't thick and goopy. I don't mind of I'm going to the beach or pool but a lot of them are a little much for every day use. Im trying to be better at protecting my face.. When I came across this I decided to splurge and try it. I hate to admit it but I'm so glad I did! It has a slight scent but nothing over powering at all. Its truly a weightless sunscreen that is perfect! I put it on before work and it doesn't make me look greasy or anything. You could probably use it under make up of you really wanted to, I just haven't tried it yet. My only complaint is the price but I haven't tried anything as good ad this! I've seen Ulta have sales on it every once in a while.

Soothing, refreshing, and effective for most uses
I found this sunscreen back when it was still reasonable priced ($10 for a bottle this size) and am now completely 100% addicted as the price continues to rise. Sigh. I don't use this anywhere but my face and neck. Putting this on my face makes me go "ahhhhh". I break out easily, burn easily, and haaaate the feeling of sunscreen. Previously, I used Neutrogena 45 or 55+ ultra-sheer dry touch, and I still use that sometimes when I expect more intense exposure, but the Coola cucumber just feels so much better. I don't actually know if I would burn in cases where I still use my other 45+ sunscreen since I haven't taken the chance. I use Coola for 30-45 minute pool sessions, and hikes between 30-90 minutes. I haven't trusted it for things like skiing, 3 hour hikes, or boating where you get intense sun and a lot of moisture exposure. Buy if you want a lightweight, refreshing face sunscreen for walks in the sun, lounging poolside, or mild-moderate hikes.
