About Fidelia Bridges
Among the small group of women admitted to the American Watercolor Society in the 1870s, she carved out a quiet specialty that set her apart from the grand landscape painters of her generation: close-focus studies of grasses, wildflowers, ferns, and nesting birds, observed at eye level in the field. Trained briefly under William Trost Richards, she shared the Pre-Raphaelite commitment to botanical accuracy but worked at an intimate scale, with a delicacy closer to Japanese print design than to Hudson River grandeur. Louis Prang published her work as chromolithographs through the 1880s, bringing it into countless American parlors. Her watercolors still feel observed rather than arranged.
