Rhaphidophora decursiva 'Dragon Tail'

Rhaphidophora decursiva 'Dragon Tail' is a climbing aroid grown for its large green leaves and dramatic mature leaf division. Young plants usually carry simpler foliage, while established climbing stems can develop long, deeply cut mature leaves.

The plant grows with robust stems and aerial roots that attach to a moss pole, coir pole or other vertical support. In bright filtered light, steady warmth and an airy root zone, the stem can thicken and climb steadily over time.

Dragon Tail plant profile

  • Plant type: Climbing tropical aroid in the Araceae family.
  • Growth habit: Robust climbing stems with aerial roots that grip a support.
  • Leaves: Juvenile leaves are simpler, while mature leaves become larger and more divided.
  • Foliage colour: Green leaves with a firm tropical texture and a deeply cut mature outline.
  • Support: A pole or slab gives the climbing stems a surface for aerial-root attachment.
  • Indoor structure: Mature stems need vertical support as leaf size increases.

Climbing growth and mature leaves

Rhaphidophora decursiva is a wet-tropical climber native from the Indian Subcontinent to South China and Indo-China. Its foliage changes noticeably with maturity, moving from less divided juvenile leaves into much longer, split leaves on established, supported climbing stems.

In a pot, the stem should be guided early so the aerial roots can attach cleanly. A stable support also keeps the plant easier to handle as the leaves expand and the stem thickens.

Care for Rhaphidophora decursiva 'Dragon Tail'

  • Light: Place in bright filtered light; harsh direct sun can scorch exposed leaf surfaces.
  • Watering: Water when the upper substrate has partly dried, then let excess water drain fully.
  • Humidity: Moderate to higher humidity keeps new divided leaves opening more evenly.
  • Temperature: Keep warm and stable, ideally above 18 °C, with protection from cold drafts.
  • Substrate: Use a chunky aroid mix with bark, coco chips, perlite, pumice or similar airy materials.
  • Support: Tie young stems loosely to a pole until aerial roots start gripping by themselves.
  • Repotting: Repot when roots circle the pot or watering becomes difficult to regulate.
  • Fertilising: Feed lightly during active growth with a balanced houseplant fertiliser.
  • Semi-hydro: Established plants can adapt to inert mineral substrates if the roots are cleaned and oxygen stays available.
  • Pruning: Trim long bare sections above a node to redirect growth or take cuttings.

Dragon Tail troubleshooting

  • Small leaves: Weak light, low warmth or unstable support can slow mature leaf development.
  • Yellow leaves: Check for wet, dense substrate around the roots before increasing watering.
  • Brown patches: Direct sun, dry roots or cold stress can mark the leaf surface.
  • Soft stems: Wet substrate with low oxygen can damage roots and lower stem tissue.
  • Pests: Inspect nodes, petioles and new leaves for thrips, spider mites, scale or mealybugs.

Safety for Rhaphidophora decursiva 'Dragon Tail'

Rhaphidophora plants contain irritating calcium oxalate crystals. Keep Rhaphidophora decursiva 'Dragon Tail' away from pets and small children, and avoid contact with sap if your skin is sensitive.

Botanical background of Rhaphidophora decursiva 'Dragon Tail'

Rhaphidophora decursiva traces back to Roxburgh's Pothos decursivus and was transferred to Rhaphidophora by Heinrich Wilhelm Schott in 1857. 'Dragon Tail' is grown as a cultivated form of this climbing species with large, divided mature foliage.

Grow Rhaphidophora decursiva 'Dragon Tail' from Foliage Factory as a supported climber with large, deeply divided mature leaves.

Calming with a pulse
I bought these to transport puppies across the US. I put one in each carrier and the puppies slept on each plane ride. A total of over 5 hours on planes. Would totally recommend.

Have to manually turn off-no timer
Just okay. It works, but my other units are on a timer and turn off themselves. This doesn’t shut off unless I manually turn it off so the batteries don’t last.

Color: Hare - Large
Great toy ! Pibble loves it! an it looks just like a Totoro which is huge plus at our house. These are very durable and once de gloved the body will last a very long time if your dog isn’t a big chewer.

Very fun toy at a great price
Color: Monsieur Acorn - Large
My dog (an American Staffordshire Terrier) lovessss to chew and destroy things! We have literally gotten three of these because she loves them so much, and they last, too!! You get the first toy, which my dog rips open. I’m not sure exactly how long it takes for her to destroy it, maybe a few days to a week. Then another little toy (with a sad face lol) is revealed. She highly enjoys this one, as well! Finally, she rips the fabric off that and then a blue, spiky ball is revealed. She lovesss to chew on it and I think the bumps are a nice texture for her mouth. She is quite a strong chewer and the ball lasts a long time!! No toy lasts forever and I have found under dog toys are quite expensive and that’s no guarantee of how long it will actually last. But I am perfectly fine with spending ~$11 every once in a while for these toys because I know she loves them, and they are not immediately destroyed.
