Anthurium villenaorum

Anthurium villenaorum forms a compact crown with dark velvet leaves and pale veins. This Peruvian Anthurium is associated with the Moyobamba area of northern Peru.

The leaves stand on firm, sometimes angular-looking petioles. The blades broaden and darken as the plant matures. In a pot, it stays compact and crown-forming.

Velvet leaves and upright crown

  • Dark green velvet leaves
  • Pale to silvery-white venation
  • Broad to elongated heart-shaped blades
  • Compact upright crown
  • Firm petioles that can look angular
  • New leaves deepen in colour as they mature

Anthurium villenaorum origin

This Anthurium is associated with humid forest conditions around Moyobamba in northern Peru. It prefers warmth, filtered light, steady humidity and an airy mix around the roots.

When it flowers, it produces the usual Anthurium spathe and spadix. As it grows, the dark velvet leaves and pale veins become more defined.

Anthurium villenaorum care

  • Light: Bright filtered light keeps growth steady. Strong direct sun can mark the velvet surface.
  • Watering: Water when the upper 20–30% of the pot has started to dry. The lower part of the pot should stay lightly moist, not packed wet.
  • Substrate: Bark with coco chips or coarse coir gives structure; pumice or perlite keeps the mix open around the roots.
  • Pot choice: Keep the pot close to the root-ball size so watering stays easier to control.
  • Temperature: Warmth suits active growth. Cold windowsills, floors and wet substrate slow the roots.
  • Humidity: Aim above 60% humidity; higher, steadier humidity helps new leaves open more cleanly.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth with a diluted complete fertiliser.
  • Repotting: Refresh the mix once it compacts or roots fill the pot. Increase pot size gradually.
  • Handling: Touch the velvet leaves as little as possible because pressure marks and residue show clearly.
  • Propagation: Use division or node-bearing sections only when the plant is strong enough.

Leaf and root issues

  • Yellowing lower leaves: Cold roots, dense substrate, slow drainage or watering too early are common causes.
  • Crisp edges: Dry air, irregular watering, fertiliser strength and salt buildup can all play a part.
  • Small new leaves: Small new leaves often come from weak roots or too little light.
  • Marked leaf surface: Water residue, handling marks and pests can all show on velvet leaves.
  • Stuck new growth: Low humidity, poor airflow or cold roots can slow new growth.
  • Slow recovery after repotting: Warmth and even moisture help new roots form.

Pot growth

Anthurium villenaorum grows best in an open mix and a pot size that matches the current roots.

Pets, children and handling

Keep Anthurium villenaorum out of reach of pets and children. Its tissues contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause mouth and throat irritation if plant material is eaten. Wash hands after cutting, dividing or handling damaged plant parts.

Name meaning

The epithet villenaorum honours Janette Karol Villena Bendez and Bruno Villena of Moyobamba, Peru. The genus name Anthurium refers to the spadix.

Cute Rhymes and wonderful info
Format: Board book, Format: Board book
This book is super cute and makes bugs interesting with it's colorful pages and different big varieties. The book rhymes throughout the pages and it's so cute and almost reminds me of song that could have sung by the "Animaniacs" (my age is showing lol). In one of the pics I show the cover damaged but that's from my son chewing on the book. Just because it's a board book doesn't meant it's exempt from damage, just makes it last a little longer than a paperback. I also REALLY like that there is a page that lists the bugs seen along with their names which is helpful in teaching your little one! My son enjoyed this beautiful book. :)

Perfect size, cute illustrations and words
Format: Board book
My toddler girl is super into bugs right now. This book was suggested alongside a bunch of other bug books I purchased (Maisy’s Nature Walk, Bugs, All Because a Little Bug Went Kachoo, The Lonely Firefly, A Good Place). What a great find! It’s the perfect board book size for me to hold or for my toddler to hold. The illustrations are darling and the words simple enough that my almost 2 year old has pages memorized. When she sees a picture she’ll spout out the words. I appreciate the back page with the illustration of all bugs with their names because lord knows my toddler asks me time and time again “what’s that?!” and mommy is fresh out of lies. My insect knowledge is clearly not as profound as my daughter.

This book is like crack to my 16 month old
Format: Board book
I bought this book as a gift for my friend's son, but when it arrived, my daughter saw it and wanted me to read it to her, so I did. Then again. Then again. Needless to say, I had to buy a second copy to send to my friend's son. It's been about a week, and my daughter is OBSESSED. There have been tantrums when we need to stop reading Some Bugs to do something else. It's by far her favorite book. The illustrations are so colorful and layered, there are so many things to look at. She loves pointing at the different bugs (her favorite ones are the hawk moth and the dog tick). The text has a great rhythm and is fun to read, I'm not tired of it yet after our hundredth reading. I highly recommend this gorgeous, fun book.

Perfect for learning about bugs!
Format: Board book
Purchased this because my kids class is learning about bugs. It is so cute, and both my kids my 3 year old and almost 2 year old love it! The pictures are so cute, and they really do go through each bug, making it educational. Such a fun book at a great price for 1-3 year olds.
