Olea europaea, or olive tree, is an evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean basin, a symbol of the Mediterranean landscape since Antiquity. Its sculpted curved trunk, narrow silver leaves that flutter at the slightest breeze, and slender silhouette give it an unmatched architectural presence. Among the plants of the Mediterranean garden, it is the ultimate reference for recreating a Southern atmosphere on a sunny balcony or terrace.

Drought resistant, low maintenance, and available in 4 sizes from compact to large specimen, it is an ideal choice for any very sunny balcony or terrace, in a pot or planted in the ground.

Exposure & Location

The olive tree is a sun-loving plant — this is non-negotiable. A minimum of 5 hours of direct sunlight per day is essential for a beautiful shape and dense silver foliage. Below that, growth slows and the foliage gradually loses its characteristic color. In a pot, it can be brought indoors to a very bright spot during winter in cold regions, but it must be returned outside as soon as spring arrives.

  • Exposure: full sun — at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day.
  • Outdoors: south or southwest-facing balcony or terrace, garden, sunny patio.
  • Indoors: south-facing window with maximum light — temporary in winter only.
  • Hardiness in pot: bring inside or protect as soon as temperatures drop below –2 °C.

Rotate the pot 90° every 2 to 3 months for a balanced shape — an olive tree exposed on only one side gradually develops an asymmetrical crown that is difficult to correct.

Watering & Care

The olive tree is one of the most drought-tolerant plants in the catalog — its deep roots and tough leaves allow it to go several weeks without watering when planted in the ground. In a pot, the finger test is essential: water only when the top 3 centimeters of soil are dry. If the leaves yellow or the foliage thins out, check the possible causes — often excess standing water or lack of light.

  • Watering: moderate — allow the soil to dry between waterings, never let water stand in the saucer.
  • Soil: light and very well-draining — potting soil + sand or perlite, never heavy and wet soil.
  • Pruning: light pruning after flowering to shape — the olive tree tolerates pruning well but does not require it.
  • Winter: reduce watering and bring the pot indoors if frost is expected below –2 °C.

In winter, the olive tree in a pot tolerates temperatures close to 0 °C if the soil is dry — it is excess moisture combined with frost that kills the potted olive tree, not the cold alone.

Decorating Ideas & Plant Pairings

The silver foliage and architectural silhouette of the olive tree create an immediate Mediterranean focal point — in a Mediterranean garden or on a sunny contemporary terrace, it naturally pairs with all plants from the Mediterranean basin and dry gardens.

  • For a graphic and colorful Mediterranean composition, pair it with the red Phormium 'Rubra Nana' in a nearby container — the olive tree’s flowing silver foliage contrasts with the upright burgundy leaves of the Phormium, two complementary textures and colors very typical of the Mediterranean.
  • To soften the silver lines with a touch of green, pair it with the variegated Carex morrowii 'Ice Dance' at the base of the pot — the cascading green and cream-white foliage of the Carex creates a soft plant cover that contrasts with the sculpted trunk of the olive tree.
  • For a fragrant and aromatic Southern terrace, surround the olive tree with stem rosemary — both Mediterranean shrubs share the same needs for sun and drought, and their combination creates an authentically Provençal composition.
  • To enhance the silhouette of the olive tree in a pot, a terracotta ceramic or natural concrete container is the most authentically Mediterranean choice — the warm, mineral base intensifies the contrast with the silver foliage and light trunk of the olive tree.

The olive tree ages beautifully — the more the trunk sculpts and hollows with years, the more character the plant gains. A 10-year-old olive tree in a pot is a decorative piece in its own right.

Verdeia Tips

  • Expose it to as much sun as possible, even in the city: the olive tree is a full sun plant that does not tolerate half measures — below 5 hours of direct sunlight per day, the foliage thins, the shape elongates, and the plant gradually loses its characteristic Mediterranean character.
  • Use a very well-draining soil and never let water stand: the olive tree resists drought but is very sensitive to excess moisture — heavy soil or a saucer full of water are the main causes of decline in pots.
  • Bring the pot indoors as soon as frost is forecast: the olive tree in a pot tolerates down to –2 °C but its roots are less protected than in the ground — a frost cloth or moving it to an unheated but very bright shelter is enough to protect it during cold snaps.

Just linear
Format: Paperback
I appreciate that it helps to organize the chaos of information, but I just used the template verbatim with my manager and it did not go very well. He said this linear approach does not work anymore with high-level corporate audiences. They want to cut right to the chase and start to dig into the deep details. This layout with simple images, even if you just pull away the map and anchor slides, makes the storytelling too much like a story, not giving enough credit to the speed at which certain audiences can and do process data on a slide. It was an interesting exercise and I still think this linear layout works in some cases. Just not if you are trying to communicate business case or other C-suite type of information.

Great book !
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
I just finished MAoS – Malware Analysis on Steroids, and all I can say is: WOW. This book operates on an entirely different level. It’s not just technical knowledge—it’s a complete shift in how you think about malware, reverse engineering, and real-world offensive/defensive operations. The way Uriel breaks down complex concepts makes you feel understood as a practitioner, while pushing you to see the deeper mechanics behind every technique. Every chapter forced me to rethink things I didn’t even realize I needed to refine. It’s rare to find a book that is both this practical and this transformative. What I loved most is how hands-on, deep, and empowering the material is. This isn’t a book you skim. I had to stop multiple times just to take notes because the insights were that valuable. It teaches you to think like a real analyst—beyond theory, beyond static patterns, straight into the mindset of true malware research. If you want clarity, breakthroughs, and a genuine upgrade in your technical intuition—this is the book to read. Honestly grateful I picked it up. Highly recommended.

Too many screenshot, not detail explain enough, like a lab manual than a book
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
Not recommended this book. This book is approximately 270 pages long, but around 200 pages are comprised of screenshots, including IDA Pro screenshots, Virustotal result screens, lists of function names, and lists of DLL file names. This book primarily shows you how to use the tools, which are illustrated mainly through screenshots of the tools' screens and results. This is a well-structured lab manual that guides you through all the necessary screens and steps to locate the flag. However, there are too many screenshots, and the concept is not explained in detail. It is expected that you will have a basic understanding to follow the lab manual. And this is not colour printing, and the photo was resized, making it a bit hard to read the screenshot details. If you are at the GREM level, you may already be familiar with using the tools. Unless you want a quick refresher on your lab skills.
