Description

Lemon scented geranium is a small evergreen shrub growing to approximately 50 cm in ideal conditions. The structure of the plant is dense and upright and is has strong stems. The small, crimped, smooth, green leaves have a distinct lemon scent. The flowers are pale pink to white and quite small. Flowers are loved by bees and the foliage is good for picking and mixing in with floral arrangements.

Uses

Culinary - The leaves of lemon scented geraniums are often used to infuse various concoctions such as teas, sugars, juices, cocktails, jams, and jellies. To infuse, the leaves often need to be dried first and then crushed to release the scent and flavour. When using the leaves in desserts, the leaves can be used while still fresh to line the pan and removed after baking.

Medicinal - The oils of scented geraniums have been cited in the past as being able to reduce fever lessen stomach cramps, and act as an astringent. It’s also believed to have a calming effect when used in aromatherapy.

Ornamental – With its delicious lemon citrus scent and stiff stems, small, round, crinkled leaves, and pale pink flowers this delicate looking plant looks lovely in window boxes or hanging baskets where its stems will trail over the side if left unpruned.

Growing conditions

Pelargonium crispum is hardy and thrives well in windy areas and likes a full sun but well drained position. Good for a cottage style borders or can be grown in containers or pots in full sun. Pinch for fullness.
