The Crassula ‘Dorothy’ is a charming and compact succulent prized for its striking geometric form and vivid color changes throughout the year. Belonging to the Crassulaceae family, this hybrid is a cross between Crassula deceptor and Crassula susannae, resulting in a plant that combines the best qualities of both parents, dense rosettes, compact size, and eye-catching texture.

Native to South Africa, each leaf is smooth yet slightly flattened, giving the plant a geometric, almost architectural beauty that feels both natural and artistic. Its compact nature makes it perfect for modern minimalist spaces and rock gardens where texture and form take center stage.

This small succulent typically reaches about 5 inches tall and 3 inches wide when mature, forming tight clusters over time.

Its leaves are soft gray-green with a hint of powdery coating, which helps protect them from harsh sunlight.

In cooler months or under bright light, the leaves often take on a rosy or reddish hue around the edges, adding seasonal color variation and charm.

During late spring to early summer, Crassula ‘Dorothy’ produces small, star-shaped white or pale pink flowers that emerge on short stalks above the foliage.

While the blooms are delicate and not overly showy, they contrast beautifully against the geometric leaves, adding to the plant’s ornamental appeal. The flowers attract pollinators like small bees and can last for several weeks under good growing conditions.

What truly sets Crassula ‘Dorothy’ apart is its compact, geometric symmetry and color-shifting foliage. Few succulents manage to combine architectural form with such subtle beauty. It’s also an ideal choice for small pots, terrariums, or window sills where space is limited but impact is desired. The plant’s slow growth and dense structure make it easy to manage indoors, and it pairs well with other miniature succulents for decorative arrangements.

When it comes to care, the Crassula ‘Dorothy’ grows best in USDA Zones 9–11.

It enjoys bright, indirect light indoors, ideally near an east- or south-facing window.

Outdoors, it should be placed in partial to full sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays in very hot climates.

For soil, use a well-draining succulent mix, preferably sandy or gritty to prevent root rot. Water sparingly — allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. During active growth (spring and summer), watering every 2–3 weeks is sufficient, and in winter, once a month or less. Keep indoor temperatures between 60–80°F, and avoid letting it drop below 40°F.

Propagation is simple through leaf or stem cuttings. Allow cuttings to callous for a few days before planting in dry, well-draining soil. They root readily, making it easy to expand your collection or share with friends.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Crassula ‘Dorothy’ is a delightful, low-maintenance succulent that perfectly balances elegance and resilience. Its geometric structure, color-changing foliage, and drought-tolerant nature make it a standout in any collection. Whether grown indoors as a tabletop accent or outdoors in a sunny rock garden, this compact succulent adds structure, texture, and beauty to any plant display, proof that small plants can make a big visual impact.

The ONLY Bones/Chews Dog-Approved in Our House!
Flavor Name: Original Jerky, Size: X-Large
We have 2 purebred pitbulls, both adult males who weigh between 75-80 pounds. We bought a huge assortment of bones, treats, and chews when we first got our boys (they're rescues, and we got them at the same time). They strongly favored these Marrowchews, even over other, imitation products of different brands. We actually didn't know they had marrow INSIDE the bones for quite some time, and as soon as we realized that, we understood why our dogs loved them so much! The way the marrow is embedded in the bone, but a ways in from either end, is really clever. The dogs can surely smell it long before they can taste it, and it seems to keep them really interested and motivated at first. Then, they get to the actual marrow, and they are working on these bones non-stop until it's completely gone. The way they are made is also really unique; they sort of 'splinter' as they get chewed, and it actually helps with doggie dental care, cleaning the teeth and massaging the gums. There is no mess with these bones, no pieces flaking or chunking off, anything like that. They are also completely odor-free. With other bones/chews, they'll start them, but lose interest really quickly, and never so much as look at those again. These specific Marrowchews are truly the ONLY ones that keep our dogs interested, and for a significant amount of time, too. They'll work on the XL sizes daily throughout the day for a total of 1-2 hours, and they last a couple of months, easily. And keep in mind, these are pretty aggressive chewers! HIGHLY recommend these, and the price on Amazon is the best anywhere!

Durable and fun
Flavor Name: Beef, Size: Medium/Large
I have two dogs and I only bought one bone over a month ago. They’ve both been chewing on it and it’s held up really well. I wouldn’t say they’re aggressive chewers, but they do like chewing. They’re still picking it up and using it, so they’re definitely not bored with it. As for me, it’s been a pretty great buy.

Tough Chew!
Flavor Name: Original Jerky, Size: Medium
Sporn is a very tough chew. We have a 22pound Beagle 1 year old. She spend little time working on the Hard plastic that encases the marrow. Now I don't doubt there are some dogs that would chew this mindlessly for the small marrow treat. It is not for my pup! She needs more play to keep at it. A TOUGH CHEW would be better slightly less thick and more marrow inside. I attached a string and had her whirly birding around chasing this bone but once we let go she has a 30 second interest. Not for every dog maybe for the big guys 100 lb brutus !

Dogs are enjoying it!
Flavor Name: Beef, Size: Medium/Large
I just got this bone today but so far my dogs love it. They have been playing with it and alternating who’s chewing on it. My 8 month old got the blue rubber piece off in about 10 minutes, so if that’s the primary factor for purchasing, note that.

I have a 10 m.o. Aussie who is in chronic chew stage. I was hoping that this bone would last longer than Benebone. Watching pup chew her little heart out, I noticed she was tearing off little pieces of the plastic bone and swallowing them. Threw out. Wish I'd returned. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR SUPER CHEWERS
