Asclepias tuberosa

Asclepias tuberosa, also known as butterfly weed, is a wonderful perennial plant native to Texas. It thrives beautifully in the dry, rocky open woods, meadows, prairies, fields, and roadsides across the state. This charming plant typically grows in a delightful clump ranging from 1 to 2.5 feet tall and showcases clusters (umbels) of bright, cheerful orange to yellow-orange flowers perched atop hairy stems with narrow, lance-shaped leaves. Unlike many milkweeds, this lovely species doesn't have milky-sapped stems.

The vibrant butterfly weed flowers transition into spindle-shaped seed pods, measuring 3 to 6 inches long, which split open when ripe, releasing a multitude of silky-tailed seeds that dance through the wind. The seed pods are a favorite in dried flower arrangements, and this plant has a wonderfully long bloom period, spanning from late spring to summer. The flowers are a delightful source of nectar for many butterflies, while the leaves serve as a nutritious food source for monarch butterfly larvae (caterpillars). Historically, the plant's roots have been used medicinally to soothe lung inflammations, and it's also fondly referred to as pleurisy root.

Butterfly weed is a breeze to grow in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils under full sun. It's drought-tolerant and thrives even in poorer, dry soils. You'll often see new growth emerging late in the spring, and these plants can be quickly cultivated from seeds. However, be patient; they may take 2 to 3 years to bloom. If seed pods aren’t removed before they burst open, mature plants can happily self-seed throughout the landscape. Butterfly weed doesn’t transplant well due to its deep taproot, so it’s best to let it settle in once established.

Great toy
Color: Hambone Super Chewer, Size: M/L
My dog loves this toy so much. He's not quite so aggressive with his chewing, now that he's getting older, but this toy lasted through his younger years, and recently started to show signs of wear. He was so sad when I threw it out, that I had to replace it. Glad it still exists - we got the first one probably 5 years ago.

Great for heavy chewers
Color: Hambone Super Chewer, Size: M/L
Our dog is a hard core chewer! This toy is very durable. Even the covering has lasted. We assumed we would need to take the cover off right away but it’s still going after 3 months. It’s definitely chew resistant

Great treat dispenser
Color: Hambone Super Chewer, Size: M/L
Great rubber toy, the outside fabric did not last long, so glad that it is a treat holder/dispenser otherwise it would have been done for in about 10min. The opening for the treats is pretty small so can only fight thinner broken up treats. Great for larger dog that likes to dissect her toys, keeping her entertained longer and no fluff all over the house

My dog loves this toy!
Color: Hambone Super Chewer, Size: M/L, Color: Hambone Super Chewer, Size: M/L
My dog LOVES this toy. It is so cute. It was a little smaller than I thought it would be, but it’s actually the perfect size for him. He carries it everywhere with him, and if he happens to have forgotten it, we say “go get your pig” and you can see it click in his head that he forgot it, and he runs to get it. He loves to drop it to make it bounce. He is 9, he used to instantly rip anything to shreds, but he seems to have gotten a little more delicate in his older age and after a few weeks hasn’t gotten through to the harder toy yet. Once this toy bites the dust, we will have to buy him another because of how much he loves his pig.

Not a Good Choice for Chewers
Color: Get Ripped Margrrrita, Size: L
I loved the idea of this toy, but it did not work or last as intended. It is pretty heavy and made of thick rubber. The flaps over the cup where the treats are dispensed did not last 5 minutes with my pup, so we can no longer use it to dispense treats/use as a brain game.
