Its large, upright, oval leaves are an extraordinary blend of pale green, cream, and deep green in an irregular mottled pattern that genuinely resembles military camouflage. The variegation is dense and complex across every leaf, making it one of the most visually interesting large-leafed houseplants available. It grows in a full, clumping, outwardly arching form that fills a space beautifully.
Good for beginners? Yes. Dieffenbachia is one of the most adaptable and forgiving large houseplants. Camouflage is easy to keep looking its best with consistent watering and medium to bright light.
Safe for cats and dogs? Dieffenbachia is toxic to pets and can irritate human skin and mucous membranes if ingested. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
Light needs: Medium to bright indirect light keeps the camouflage pattern most vivid and the growth most vigorous. It tolerates lower light but the variegation becomes less defined. Avoid direct sun which can scorch the pale portions of the leaves.
Care at a glance: Water when the top inch of soil is dry. Feed monthly in spring and summer. Wipe large leaves occasionally to keep them glossy. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 60°F.
