Black Rose Aeonium (Aeonium arboreum 'Nigrum')

Black Rose Aeonium is a bold, architectural succulent that brings dramatic color and clean structure to containers, patios, and bright indoor spaces. Its dark rosettes read like living sculpture, giving you a high-end look with a simple care routine. With bright light and fast drainage, it stays compact, richly colored, and visually crisp. As it matures, it branches and builds presence, turning one plant into a layered display.

Distinctive Features

This branching aeonium forms woody stems topped with large rosettes that deepen to dark burgundy, purple, or near-black in strong sun, often showing a greener center in lighter shade. In late winter to spring, mature rosettes can produce clusters of small, star-shaped yellow flowers on upright stalks, creating a striking contrast against the dark foliage. Like many aeoniums, rosettes that flower may decline afterward, while the plant continues through new growth and branching. The overall habit is upright and shrubby, with a strong silhouette that looks intentional year-round.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun to part shade, with brighter light supporting best color and tighter rosettes.
  • Soil: Fast-draining cactus or succulent mix, or gritty, well-drained garden soil in mild climates.
  • Water: Water when the soil is mostly dry, then allow it to dry again, and reduce watering during hot summer dormancy.
  • USDA Zones: 9 to 11.
  • Mature Size: About 3 to 4 feet tall and 2 to 4 feet wide in the ground, and typically smaller in containers.
  • Habit: Upright, branching succulent shrub with rosettes at stem tips.

Ideal Uses

  • Containers: Use in patio pots where the dark rosettes can anchor a clean, modern design.
  • Rock Gardens: Plant in gritty beds for a sculptural accent that pairs well with stone and gravel.
  • Xeriscape Plantings: Add bold form and color to low-water landscapes in mild-winter regions.
  • Indoor Bright Spots: Grow near a sunny window to keep rosettes compact and richly colored.
  • Focal Point: Feature a single plant in a simple pot where the dark rosettes become the main visual statement.
  • Mixed Succulent Displays: Pair with silvery or chartreuse companions to amplify contrast and texture.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Drainage: Keep roots out of soggy soil, since prolonged wetness can cause rot.
  • Watering Rhythm: Water deeply but infrequently, and do not water heavily during summer dormancy.
  • Light Management: Increase light gradually if growth stretches, and provide some protection from extreme heat in very hot locations.
  • Pruning: Trim leggy stems to shape the plant and encourage branching, then allow cut ends to dry before watering.
  • Cold Protection: Protect from frost, and move containers to shelter when freezing weather is expected.

Why Choose Black Rose Aeonium?

  • Dark Color Impact: Deep rosettes create instant contrast that elevates containers and modern landscapes.
  • Architectural Form: Strong rosette structure and branching habit deliver a designed, sculptural look.
  • Seasonal Blooms: Yellow flowers in late winter to spring add a bright contrast to the dark foliage.
  • Low Water Needs: Thrives with a dry-between-waterings routine once established.
  • Container Friendly: Easy to feature and control size in pots with excellent drainage.
  • Style Versatility: Works as a statement plant alone or as the anchor in mixed succulent compositions.

Black Rose Aeonium is best when treated like a living centerpiece: bright light, sharp drainage, and a controlled watering rhythm. Give it those basics, and it will reward you with dramatic color, bold rosettes, and an architectural form that makes any space feel more intentional.

Is not as durable as they say for large dogs
Color: Multi-colored
My dog loved the fact he got a new toy and he loved the toy itself. Carrying it around and shaking it, that is. The ropes are small and pop right back out of the ball. They are more for a small dog to tug on. The suction is strong but still not strong enough for a 100 lbs Rotti. He kept grabbing the eleasic ropes and pulling off the floor.

Even the rope is awesome!
Color: Multi-colored
The suction power on this wasn’t the greatest. Even using the sticky patch provided didn't keep it stuck to the floor. I will say though: I was terrified it would destroy the cheap flooring I put it on, but the sticky stuff didn’t harm the floor at all. The toy itself has been fantastic. My pup loves to chew on all parts of it (the ball, the suction piece, and the rope) and it’s held up against his jaws of steel. I will be purchasing another one of these once he’s finally destroyed the original (we’ve had it almost 3 months with just about daily use).

Perfect
Color: Blue
I am fostering a Husky/Black and Tan Coon dog. We have had her since early February. She has chewed up a lot of my shoes. She destroyed my other dogs stuffed squeaky toys. So I decided to buy her this ball. She reminds me of Linus from Charlie Brown. She wakes up with this ball and falls asleep with it. I’ve not had another shoe fatality. This ball is her most loved possession. It is pretty tough. Now She did kill the squeaker within the first few hours (which trust me I am GOOD with that! I’ve never put treats in it. The rope is still attached. After this review I am going to buy her another as a back up!

Cute donuts. Not destroyed (yet!)
These squeaky doughnuts are really cute. It’s a bonus that it comes with two. I didn’t realize that when I ordered. I have two dogs and now they won’t fight over a doughnut just kidding one dog is 14 and doesn’t play with toys anymore. The other one is six and loves toys but for some reason he’s not really into this one maybe this will change but for now he only goes after it if I throw it, I’ll update this review to comment on durability if and when he starts playing with the toy, but for now it’s very adorable because it’s just sitting on the floor. Update: he picked one up only because I put it in front of him to take the photo!
