Elephant Ear (Alocasia spp.)

Elephant Ear is a bold tropical plant group valued for dramatic foliage, strong architectural form, and lush texture in indoor and outdoor displays. Depending on the species or cultivar, Alocasia can range from compact tabletop houseplants to large patio or landscape specimens with oversized leaves. Most selections are grown for their striking foliage rather than flowers, making them useful for adding height, contrast, and tropical character to containers, interiors, patios, and seasonal garden beds. With bright filtered light, warmth, humidity, rich well-drained soil, and steady moisture, Elephant Ear brings high-impact foliage to spaces where shape and texture matter.

Distinctive Features

Elephant Ear plants are known for their large, often arrow-shaped, heart-shaped, or shield-like leaves held on sturdy upright petioles. Foliage varies widely by type, with colors and patterns that may include glossy green, dark green, bronze, black, silver, gray-green, bold veins, variegation, or textured surfaces. Many Alocasia selections form upright clumps from rhizomes, tubers, or corm-like structures and can produce offsets over time. Flowers may appear as a spathe and spadix on mature plants, but they are usually secondary to the foliage and are not the main reason most gardeners grow Alocasia.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Grows best in bright indirect light, filtered sun, or partial shade, with protection from harsh direct afternoon sun that can scorch the foliage.
  • Soil: Prefers fertile, organically rich, well-drained soil or a chunky indoor aroid mix that holds light moisture while allowing good airflow around the roots.
  • Water: Performs best with consistent moisture during active growth, allowing the upper portion of the soil to dry slightly before watering again, while avoiding soggy conditions.
  • USDA Zones: Most types are best grown outdoors year-round only in frost-free tropical to subtropical climates, generally USDA Zones 10 to 12, though cold tolerance varies by species and cultivar.
  • Mature Size: Typically ranges from about 1 to 8 feet tall and wide depending on type, with compact jewel alocasias staying small and larger elephant ear selections becoming much more substantial.
  • Habit: Forms an upright, clumping tropical plant with bold leaves rising from the base on sturdy petioles.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use as a dramatic foliage focal point in bright indoor rooms, patio containers, entry planters, poolside plantings, courtyard gardens, or protected tropical-style beds.
  • Houseplant: Grow compact selections indoors where bright indirect light, warmth, humidity, and careful watering can support healthy foliage.
  • Patio Container: Plant larger selections in decorative containers for summer impact that can be moved indoors or protected before frost.
  • Tropical Garden: Pair with caladiums, cannas, bananas, gingers, ferns, begonias, and other bold foliage plants for a layered warm-season display.
  • Collector Plant: Feature unusual selections with dark foliage, silver veining, variegation, or textured leaves in specialty indoor plant collections.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Water when the upper soil begins to dry, then allow excess water to drain fully so the roots stay evenly moist but never waterlogged.
  • Humidity: Provide moderate to high humidity indoors to help reduce leaf edge browning and support clean foliage growth.
  • Light Care: Keep plants in bright filtered light and rotate containers occasionally to encourage balanced growth.
  • Fertilizing: Feed during the active growing season with a balanced fertilizer to support steady foliage production.
  • Overwintering: Move container plants indoors before cold weather or protect them from frost, since most Alocasia are not reliably hardy in freezing climates.
  • Leaf Cleanup: Remove yellowing, damaged, or tired leaves as needed to keep the plant looking clean and encourage fresh growth.

Why Choose Elephant Ear?

  • Bold Foliage: Produces large, dramatic leaves that bring strong tropical texture and visual impact to indoor and outdoor spaces.
  • Wide Variety: Includes compact tabletop types, dark-leaved collector plants, variegated selections, and large patio or landscape specimens.
  • Architectural Form: Adds upright structure and height without relying on flowers for ornamental value.
  • Container Friendly: Works well in decorative pots where plants can be enjoyed outdoors in warm weather and protected indoors before cold temperatures arrive.
  • Tropical Effect: Brings lush, resort-style character to patios, pool areas, bright interiors, seasonal displays, and protected garden beds.

Elephant Ear is an excellent choice for gardeners and houseplant collectors who want bold foliage, strong structure, and tropical character. Whether used as a compact indoor accent or a large seasonal container feature, Alocasia offers dramatic leaves, varied colors and textures, and a high-impact presence that can transform bright indoor spaces, patios, and warm-season plantings.

Revives my idealistic heart to hold out for real peace
Format: Paperback
Sometimes it's easy to think the world has become so murky that truth barely matters any more. Kazu Haga keeps it real and shows us how to be nonviolent without becoming martyrs to the cause. The book acts as a reminder that taking a principled stand on violence is the only way change has occurred in history, but also acknowledges that we need to love our whole selves and use our brains to step outside habitual patterns of trauma-triggered violence.

Good for general knowledge!
Format: Paperback
I'm an IT guy but not an Active Directory SME. If it doesn't have a command line and doesn't route or switch I quickly fall off the cliff of interest in it. That being said, I needed to have a good starting guide and future reference guide to Active Directory so after some Google'ing I settled on this book. While I haven't read it cover to cover yet, I have used it to study up on a few specific areas of AD. It's also got a permanent spot near by work desk for use as a reference guide as needed.

Good info that helps
Format: Paperback
This had info that helped our AD lockouts issues or at least ease the pain while our vendor figures it out. A powershell command that unlocks all AD users instead of having to unlock each one. In the troubleshooting section

More than just the most comprehensive book on AD
Format: Paperback
I have been working with Active Directory since it was released in 2000 and even before that if you count its predecessor Exchange's directory. I can confidently say that this is the most comprehensive book on Active Directory that I have ever read. Of course there are all of the basics like designing AD structures, migrations to AD 2022, management of objects and group policies but then all of the AD services are also covered in-depth like DNS, DS, LDS, FS, RMS and CS. Furthermore this book tackles trusts, database maintenance and backup and recovery. While not a book about Azure AD, there is a ton of information about Azure AD. The author takes the time and effort to compare AD with Azure AD and there are hundreds of references to Azure AD in terms of building out hybrid AD environments, federated identity and notes about how things are done in Azure AD versus AD. The chapter on PowerShell demonstrates scripts for both AD and Azure AD. Here is what I think makes this book special though, and it is how the entire context for the book is around security, identity and access management. Essentially this book can be viewed as a book on security, identity and access management that demonstrates how to practically implement those concepts in Active Directory and Azure AD. There is fantastic information that explains the concepts of identity and access management clearly and concisely and covers topics such as zero trust, privileged access management (PAM) and more. Then, these concepts are translated into how they are implemented in Active Directory. It's a great way to present the information as it provides real world context and clearly explains the purpose of Active Directory versus purely just describing technical features and functionality. This is the way all technical books should be written.
