Jane Magnolia (Magnolia x 'Jane')

Jane Magnolia (Magnolia x 'Jane'), is a compact deciduous flowering shrub to small tree known for its rich purple-pink blooms that open in spring and often repeat lightly into summer. It is a favorite for home landscapes because it stays manageable, flowers heavily once established, and delivers a bold color that stands out against early season greens and evergreen backdrops. The blooms are tulip-shaped and typically open a bit later than the earliest magnolias, which can help reduce the risk of the display being spoiled by late frosts. With its dense habit and reliable spring performance, Jane Magnolia makes an excellent focal point near entries, patios, and mixed borders.

Distinctive Features

The flowers are the main attraction, with a deep reddish-purple exterior and a lighter, rosy interior that creates a two-tone effect as the petals open. Blooms are large for the size of the plant and often appear in abundance along the branches, giving a full, showy look in spring. After flowering, the plant leafs out into a neat canopy of medium green leaves that provides a clean backdrop for perennials and summer color. In good conditions, Jane can produce a smaller flush of blooms later in the season, adding another layer of interest beyond the main spring show.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun to part shade; best flowering in full sun, with light afternoon shade helpful in hotter sites.
  • Soil: Moist, well-drained, organic-rich soil; slightly acidic to neutral is ideal.
  • Water: Moderate; keep evenly moist during establishment and water during extended dry spells.
  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 4 to 8.
  • Habit: Deciduous multi-stem shrub to small tree with a rounded, dense habit.
  • Mature Size: About 10 to 15 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Plant where spring flowers can be enjoyed from key views, such as near an entry, patio, or main window.
  • Foundation Accent: Use as a scaled, spring-flowering anchor that softens corners and adds seasonal color.
  • Courtyard and Small Garden Feature: Fits tight spaces while still delivering a strong magnolia bloom display.
  • Mixed Border Highlight: Combine with evergreens, bulbs, and perennials for layered interest from spring through fall.
  • Low Branching Specimen: Allow it to grow naturally as a multi-stem plant to create a full, shrub-like silhouette.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Water deeply and consistently during the first one to two seasons; steady moisture supports bud formation and bloom quality.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2 to 3 inch mulch layer to protect shallow roots and stabilize soil moisture, keeping mulch off the stems.
  • Fertilizing: Feed lightly in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer if growth is slow; avoid overfeeding.
  • Pruning: Prune sparingly after flowering to remove dead wood or refine shape; magnolias prefer minimal pruning.
  • Cold and Frost Considerations: Site out of strong wind and late frost pockets when possible to help protect spring buds.

Why Choose Jane Magnolia?

  • Bold Two-Tone Flowers: Purple-pink blooms with lighter interiors create a rich, high-impact spring display.
  • Compact, Garden-Friendly Size: Provides magnolia beauty without the scale of larger tree forms.
  • Later Bloom Timing: Often blooms after the earliest magnolias, reducing the chance of frost damage.
  • Repeat Bloom Potential: Can produce a lighter second flush of flowers later in the season in good conditions.
  • Versatile Landscape Role: Works as a specimen, foundation accent, or focal point in mixed borders and smaller gardens.

If you want a compact magnolia with rich spring color and a reliable, landscape-friendly habit, Jane Magnolia delivers a memorable bloom season and focal point presence that fits naturally into everyday garden designs.

Best electric corkscrew - by far
I have tried others but this electric corkscrew outshines them all....so far. Really like it. I have been disappointed with some before though if you get a very dry cork that splinters.....but this one has a much smoother operation and just works better. Good price too.

It is light weight, rechargeable and it works hands-free.
This wine bottle opener is well designed and well constructed. It comes with a foil cutter and works hands-free when you push the button. It pulls up the cork - and then pushes it back out to discard the cork. It is rechargeable!! It is replacing an older opener that left behind cork fragments in the wine - and ate AA batteries quickly.

Best on the market!
I have tried three other brands of electric cork pullers. The fact that I now invested in a fourth probably telegraphs what this review is all about: this Vinabon device is great, hands down winner in the electric cork puller sweepstakes! First, its motor is more powerful. Some winemakers are employing corks that fit pretty tightly, and the other brands I used would occasionally be unable to remove the cork. The screw would simply stop turning, without ay way of resuming. Advantage: the bottle. Second, it is small, about half the size of the others, leaving a small footprint on the counter. Third, it lasts much longer on a single charge. It doesn't sit in a cradle, because it doesn't need to. Assuming you open 10 to 20 bottles a week, you will be able to go two weeks without needing to plug the charging cable in, and a full charge does not take long. 4 vertical lights on the cylinder tell you how much of a charge remains. Fourth, you simply press and release the start button and maintain gentle pressure on the bottle while the device descends into the cork and removes it. As soon as you remove the device from the bottle, it immediately begins to eject the cork. All with that one touch of the button! Fifth, if you encounter a particularly tight cork, the device will stop, whereupon you push the button again and it continues. A couple of synthetic corks required me to restart 3 for 4 times, but it ultimately conquered them all! That leaves only one issue: a failed cork that breaks during the removal process, because the screw cannot engage the cork enough to remove it without it breaking. To my knowledge, the only solutions to this, with any cork puller, are to resort to an Ah So, or if that cannot do it, just shove the cork down into the bottle, and drink the entire bottle in one evening. Truth to tell, I have, myself, actually enjoyed that latter remedial step, especially with a larger format bottle on an evening when I am dining alone. I cannot yet report on the ultimate problem that seems to vex all electric cork pullers I have owned: If the cork disintegrates within the cylinder during removal, how do you get the remains out? I threw my last cork puller away because I could not remove the cork detritus stuck in the cylinder, rendering the device useless thereafter. If there is a solution to that, I would not be surprised to find that this unit already handles the problem. If BMW were to ever make an electric cork puller, I expect it would be much like this one. t costs almost twice as much as the others I have owned, but you get what you pay for. After all, you can buy a small fleet of Yugo's for the price of a BMW. Bravo, Vinabon! I

Best Wine Opener ever
I hoped I made a wise choice to buy this wine opener and boy did I make the right choice. I have had 2 other electric openers and this is by far the best. You place it on the bottle and press the button once. You hold the bottle and opener and the opener does its job, you don't need to hold the button down. Once it pulls the cork turn it up side down and place it on the counter. It automatically stops and then automatically reverses and ejects the cork. You dinner guests will love watching it. Great opener!!!!!!
