Royal Red Butterfly Bush Turns Your Landscape Into a Pollinator Manget

Fragrance, Color, and Blooms that Last All Summer Long

  • Long, cone-shaped panicles in deep magenta to reddish-purple bloom from early summer through fall.
  • Powerfully fragrant with a sweet, honey-like scent that carries through the garden on warm days.
  • Draws butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds in impressive numbers throughout the blooming season.
  • Fast-growing and vigorous; reaches 6 to 8 ft. tall with an arching, upright habit
  • Hardy in USDA Zones 5–9; drought tolerant, deer-resistant, and genuinely low-maintenance once established

The Royal Red Butterfly Bush (Buddleja davidii 'Royal Red') produces deep reddish-purple flowers that bloom from summer to fall, attracting butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees with their sweet fragrance and nectar-rich clusters.

The Buddleja davidii Royal Red Butterfly Bush is a sight for the eyes planted in any butterfly garden landscape! As long as you have a sunny planting spot this flowering perennial shrub will flourish with huge flower heads whose fragrance will attract butterflies and other pollinators like bees or hummingbirds to your landscape.

This flowering butterfly bush plant features very dark red conical flower heads that have a bloom time from early to mid-summer to early fall at their prime. You can start seeing the clusters of flowers as early as May or June and they will last all the way until September. They will appear on a long shrub-like spike that surrounds the circumference of the plant.

The Butterfly Bush Royal Red is a fantastic landscaping addition, as it adds both aesthetics and function to any outdoor space. Plant it in the garden border, where its stunning reddish-purple blooms can accentuate other colors, or use it as an anchor plant for a butterfly garden. The Royal Red Butterfly Bush is a wonderful way to lend color and vibrancy to patios, balconies, or small spaces. Furthermore, the plant is a pollinator and attracts beautiful butterflies that typically swarm to its lush, nectar-rich bloom.

What Makes the Royal Red Butterfly Bush Special?

Blooms That Keep Coming: Royal Red flowers on new wood, which means it produces fresh blooms on every new shoot the plant puts out through the season. Deadheading spent panicles encourages the next round of flowers and keeps the display looking full and intentional from summer through the first frosts of fall. Few shrubs in this size range give you that kind of sustained color with so little intervention.

Fragrance That Earns Its Place. The long flower spikes carry a genuinely sweet, honey-like scent that enhances the garden beyond just the visual. On warm summer evenings, the fragrance reaches out into outdoor living spaces in a way that makes the plant valuable even when you're not standing right next to it.

A Pollinator Hub. The name isn't an exaggeration. Butterflies of all varieties find these blooms reliably and return to them repeatedly through the season. Bees work the panicles heavily as well, and hummingbirds visit with regularity. If building a productive pollinator garden is part of the goal, Royal Red earns a primary spot.

Fast Growth, Strong Presence. This is a vigorous shrub that reaches 6 to 8 feet with a broad, arching habit. The long flower spikes add strong vertical interest, and the lance-shaped gray-green foliage with silvery undersides has a soft, attractive texture between blooms. It works as a specimen plant, anchors a mixed border, and provides excellent backdrop height for shorter perennials and ornamental grasses planted in front of it.

How to Care for Your Royal Red Butterfly Bush

The Buddleja Royal Red Butterfly Bush grows to a mature size of 6-8 feet tall, making it an ideal choice for planting in a mixed garden bed or as a colorful hedging option. This butterfly bush thrives in USDA grow zones 5-9, requiring at least six hours of direct sunlight daily to produce its stunning blooms.

  • Plant in full sun with 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily which will produce the heaviest blooms.
  • Tolerates a wide range of soils but prefers a more well-drained soil mix.Water regularly through the establishment period. Once rooted in, the plant handles dry periods with solid drought tolerance.
  • Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and regulate temperature through summer heat
  • Prune in late winter or early spring, down to about 12 to 18 inches from the ground, to encourage the vigorous new growth that carries the season's flowers.
  • Deadhead spent panicles through the season to encourage continuous reblooming

History of Egypt
Format: Kindle
Egypt has played a vital role throughout history. This book traces and evaluates the history of Egypt from ancient times until the modern period. During ancient times, the Pharaohs created a strong Egypt. During the Ottoman times, Egypt played a significant role as a regional power. Both French and British played a vital role in Egyptian politics. The Suez canal put Egypt, an important player in world commerce. The Nasser regime entered Egypt into cold world politics. The USA managed under Sadat to place Egypt at the American camp. Eventually, Egypt was the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with Israel after various brutal wars. Egyptian culture dominated western civilization throughout the centuries. The reader will enjoy this book.

Great summary of Egyptian history
Format: Kindle
The book is—as the subtitle states—an “Overview of Egyptian History.” The book is a brief summary of Egypt’s long and interesting history. It starts with historical events: who were the rulers? What territories did Egypt conquer? Who conquered Egypt. The second part of the book discusses social, economic, and religious history. This primer lays out all of the above topics but with little detail so the reader may wish to select topics of interest to study in further depth elsewhere. Because Egypt’s history includes millennia, I find it hard to understand, so reading this book was valuable to me. The book is written in a style that makes it easy to read. It is not at all dry as some textbooks can be. I recommend this book to anyone who wants an overview of Egyptian history and look forward to reading other books in the series.

Far from enthralling, but I did learn
Format: Paperback
This book was a disappointment. It looked like exactly what I was looking for: an overview of the history, society, and culture of Egypt from ancient to modern times that wasn't 500+ pages long. I did learn a fair bit of information, but unfortunately, the book is far from "enthralling." It reads like a high school student's book report. In addition, it sometimes just throws terms out there with no explanation, and I found myself having to consult Google. For example, it says "Since hieroglyphs were difficult to create, the Egyptians developed hieretic writing, which was a type of cursive script. Later, demotic writing was developed for ordinary documents." What is demotic writing? How is it different from hieretic? The book doesn't even provide a picture. I had to go to Wikipedia to find out what these things are. This book needs slightly more detail and an author with better writing style / storytelling abilities. That said, it still may be the best short introduction available.
