Spaan's Dwarf Shore Pine (Pinus contorta 'Spaan's Dwarf')

Spaan's Dwarf Shore Pine is a compact evergreen conifer that brings rugged pine character in a small, landscape-friendly size. It is a great way to add year-round structure and bold texture to beds where you want an evergreen that feels natural and collected, not overly formal. The dense habit keeps plantings looking finished through winter, while the tough performance makes it a strong choice for sunny, well-drained sites. If you want a durable dwarf pine with a distinctive, coastal-style look, Spaan's Dwarf is a solid pick.

Distinctive Features

This dwarf selection of shore pine forms a dense, compact plant with needle-rich growth and sturdy branching that holds a rounded to broadly mounded silhouette. Needles are typically medium to dark green, creating a strong evergreen presence that anchors mixed plantings in every season. The plant can develop characterful branching as it matures, giving it a slightly rugged, natural look that pairs well with stone and gravel. Its interest is driven by form, texture, and evergreen structure rather than flowers, providing dependable four-season value.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun is best for dense growth and strongest form.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained soil and performs well in sandy or rocky soils when drainage is good.
  • Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide deep watering during extended dry periods.
  • USDA Zones: Zones 4 to 8.
  • Mature Size: Typically grows about 3 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 8 feet wide over time.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use as a focal point in a small bed where the compact, rugged pine form can anchor the view year-round.
  • Rock and Gravel Beds: Pair with stone and gravel mulch to highlight texture and keep maintenance simple.
  • Conifer Gardens: Add to a conifer collection for natural character and compact scale.
  • Sunny, Lean Sites: Use in well-drained areas where tougher evergreens are needed for structure.
  • Mixed Shrub Borders: Place among flowering shrubs and perennials to add evergreen mass and winter presence.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Keep evenly moist the first season, then water during drought to reduce stress and maintain vigor.
  • Mulching: Mulch lightly or use gravel mulch to conserve moisture, keeping material off the stems.
  • Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to remove dead wood and refine outline if needed.
  • Candle Control: Shorten spring candles if you want denser growth and a tighter, more compact outline.
  • Site Selection: Avoid wet soils and low spots, since consistent drainage supports long-term health.

Why Choose Spaan's Dwarf Shore Pine?

  • Compact Pine Character: Delivers rugged shore pine texture in a smaller, easier-to-place size.
  • Durable Performance: Handles sun and well-drained, leaner soils once established.
  • Year-Round Structure: Dense branching keeps beds anchored through winter and seasonal transitions.
  • Low Maintenance Habit: Naturally tidy growth needs minimal pruning and simple care.
  • Design Versatility: Works in rock beds, conifer gardens, and mixed borders as a steady evergreen anchor.

If you want a compact evergreen with natural pine character and dependable year-round structure, Spaan's Dwarf Shore Pine is an excellent choice. Give it full sun, well-drained soil, and consistent moisture while it establishes, then let it mature into a durable landscape feature. It is a reliable way to add four-season texture and rugged evergreen presence to smaller beds.

a modern love story
Format: Kindle
This book captured my attention from the first line. She has a way of making you feel the emotions, heartache, and even loving memories she shares. I literally remember stopping to tell my boyfriend I couldn't wait to have kids because of the way she described picking up her children from school and their innocent smiles as soon as they saw her. It's a tragedy and a love story, and a coming to her own all in one. Loved this book!

Memories Are Made of This
Format: Kindle
Belle Burden has overcome a weighty burden—pun intended! Strangers is a book of many colors. There is so much of the overcast gray of heartbreak and estrangement. There is plenty of the blue of heavy disappointment and grief. But happily for every reader, there are so many of the bright colors of happiness and fulfillment. The premise of this memoir has been well documented—a wealthy, privileged life led by a woman of means is interrupted by the abrupt departure of her husband for points unknown. Children remain—-lodged in some difficult ‘tween years. Central is the woman who just happens to be made of pretty stern stuff as it turns out and who is a brilliant writer. Belle Burden is the belle of her own tale. She shares it all with the reader in un-put-down-able prose, sparing nothing, We are richer for reading Belle Burden’s beautifully crafted memoir. The warm glow of hope is there for all to share. Well done!

BRAVO!
Format: Kindle
Bravely written account of a very painful time in a persons life. Told with out malice and highlights the awful task of having to go through a divorce navigating your way under almost suffocating circumstances. Be strong and realize that whether a person wants it or not, you are forced face the fact that you are making the most important financial decsion of your life.

Surprisingly Unputdownable
Format: Kindle
I read saw several reviews that said this book wasn’t really about anything, and they were right. There was no big drama, no fighting, no headline news. But there was something in the writing that felt profound and I couldn’t stop reading. And I’m glad I didn’t. In the end for me, this was a story about a marriage, and choices that were made and the strength of a woman who wouldn’t be silent, and the writing that brought so much emotion with it that I wound up feeling all of it so deeply. And when a writer can create those feelings in me, then her book was definitely worth reading. I highly recommend this book - I don’t think you’ll regret the time you spend in its pages. I know I didn’t.

Slightly Interesting
Format: Kindle
First, I think Belle is a great writer. There was a lot of effort put into making this a very readable book. I also think that what happened to her really was terrible. Her husband 100% was wrong in what he did to her with the affair and his disappearance. Ultimately, her marriage prior to the betrayal seemed very superficial. She acknowledges that she chose the comforts of wealth over a close relationship. She had a part time husband/father and honestly it's not surprising that he left. He was barely there to begin. Her absolute terror in imagining that she would drop down from the top 0.1% down to around the top 1% was not the compelling tragedy that she seems to think it is. Her bemoaning of the loss of ultra luxuries tended to diminish the emotional toll of her plight. The book is laced through with the eventual end that her husband is going to take his assets and half of hers, but it never happens. I think she wants to relate the uncertainty and fear that she had, but it comes off as fake panic. In the end, it's a sad story, but it was very predictable. It's a story about a woman who outsourced her responsibilities, who doesn't know how to operate without extreme wealth, and who shudders at the prospect of having to work a job. It was a short book, but 3 times longer than necessary.
