The Philodendron Pedatum is a spectacular climbing plant known for its large deeply cut leaves that create an immediate architectural and graphic effect. Its slender habit and bold plant silhouette make it one of the centerpiece pieces of our Philodendron collection.

Native to the tropical forests of South America, Philodendron pedatum naturally grows climbing on trees in humid understories, developing increasingly cut and imposing leaves as it grows. With its height of 130 cm, it elegantly structures a living room, office, or large entryway — an XXL plant for those who want a strong visual impact.

Which Philodendron variety to choose?

The Philodendron genus offers an immense diversity of shapes and sizes — here’s how the Philodendron Pedatum stands out from other available varieties:

  • Philodendron Pedatum (this plant) — deeply cut leaves, imposing climbing habit (H130 cm | Decorative pot Ø27 cm). The most architectural and largest version.
  • Philodendron 'Green Wonder' — large whole bright green leaves, generous upright habit (H100 cm | Decorative pot Ø24 cm). The most majestic and fleshy version.
  • Philodendron Melanochrysum — velvety dark green leaves with light veins, climbing habit (H75 cm | Decorative pot Ø21 cm). The most sophisticated version.
  • Philodendron Birkin — dark green leaves striped with white, compact and graphic habit. The elegant variegated version.
  • Philodendron Selloum 'Atom' — compact, dense cut leaves (H25 cm | Decorative pot Ø12 cm). The miniature cut version, perfect for starting out.
  • Philodendron White Princess — white and green variegated leaves, climbing habit. The rarest variegated version.
  • Philodendron Prince of Orange — young bright orange leaves turning green. The most colorful and luminous version.

Light & placement

The Philodendron Pedatum thrives in bright indirect light — the better the light, the more deeply cut and larger its leaves become. The question Philodendron or Monstera often arises for this size: both enjoy the same light conditions.

  • Light: bright indirect light to partial shade — avoid direct sun that burns the leaves.
  • Ideal: spacious living room, office, entrance, or large room with a well-exposed window.
  • Temperature: 18 to 27 °C, without sudden changes or drafts.
  • Substrate: light, rich, and well-draining — universal potting soil mixed with perlite.

Set up a moss stake upon arrival — Philodendron Pedatum develops much larger and more cut leaves when it can climb vertically.

Watering & care

Philodendron Pedatum tolerates occasional missed watering well — it prefers slightly dry substrate rather than soggy. Yellowing leaves almost always indicate overwatering, rarely underwatering.

  • Watering: moderate — let the top 3 to 5 cm of substrate dry out between waterings.
  • Frequency: about once a week in spring-summer, every 2 weeks in winter.
  • Drainage: essential — use a perforated pot with well-draining substrate.
  • Humidity: prefers 60–70% humidity — mist occasionally or place near other plants.
  • Fertilizer: once a month in spring-summer with diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants.
  • Cleaning: gently wipe the large leaves with a damp cloth to preserve their shine.

Decor ideas & plant pairings

With its XXL cut foliage and upright habit, the Philodendron Pedatum is a structural plant — it naturally fits into large tropical arrangements.

  • Create an XXL jungle by pairing the Philodendron Pedatum with an Alocasia Regal Shield with dark whole leaves and a Rhapis Excelsa in the background — three very different shapes (cut / broad whole / palmate) for a very harmonious composition.
  • Place it in a living room corner in the Elho Brussels Anthracite decorative pot Ø30 cm — the matte anthracite gray enhances the deep green of the cut foliage without competing with the plant’s silhouette.
  • Pair it with a Monstera Deliciosa for a duo of cut foliage with very different cuts — the Pedatum with its deep, slender lobes, the Monstera with its wide, round fenestrations.
  • For a bright XXL entrance, place it in the Elho Greenville White decorative pot Ø30 cm — the clean white creates a sharp contrast with the vivid green foliage and adds lightness to the arrangement.

Verdeia tips

  • Install a stake from the start: Philodendron Pedatum develops much larger and more cut leaves when climbing — a moss stake regularly moistened also stimulates aerial roots and strengthens the plant.
  • Wipe the leaves once a month: dust on large cut leaves reduces photosynthesis and dulls the shiny green foliage — a damp cloth gently passed over each lobe is enough to restore the plant’s full brightness.
  • Repot every 2 to 3 years in spring: into a slightly larger pot with fresh, well-draining substrate — properly done, repotting restarts growth and encourages the formation of larger new leaves.

Three books in one....
Format: Paperback
This is a three books in one. Could You Survive The Cretaceous Period, Could You Survive The Jurassic Period, and Could You Survive The Ice Age? It’s a LOT of fun. The last book is, in fact, split into three stories. As you get to try to survive in North America, Europe, and Australia. I enjoyed all the setting. Though I have to be honest I failed to return to the modern time from the Jurassic period. Trapped!!!! And…my friends in the book had a kid. I hope that does not destroy the timeline. But I enjoyed it. It reminded me a lot of the old Time Machine books.

Format: Paperback
The nephews (10 & 8) love these kinds of books! I bought the prehistoric one as well and after they were done they swapped to continue their adventures! They're asking for more and choose the books over screen time! I'd say thats a win for the Aunt!
