Forage oats (Avena sativa) are a cool-season cereal grain that are commonly grown for livestock forage and as a wildlife food source. Oats are fast-growing, nutritious, and attract a wide variety of wildlife, including deer, wild turkey, and small game. When planted as a wildlife food plot, forage oats can provide an abundant source of green forage and grain for wildlife during the fall and winter months. They also have the ability to improve soil structure and are often used in cover crop rotations.

Benefits for Wildlife Habitat

Nutritious green forage and grain that attract deer, wild turkey, and small mammals.
✔ Grows quickly, providing early-season forage for wildlife.
✔ Can be left standing to provide a food source for wildlife through the winter.
✔ Helps improve soil health by preventing erosion and increasing organic matter.
Pollinator-friendly, offering a habitat for beneficial insects like bees.

Planting Guidelines

  • Planting Times:

    • Early Fall (August–September): For best results, plant oats in early fall to ensure they grow well before the first frost and provide winter forage.
    • Early Spring (March–April): Oats can also be planted in early spring as a cover crop or wildlife forage option before summer heat sets in.
  • Seeding Depth:

    • 1 to 1.5 inches deep for optimal seed-to-soil contact and consistent germination.
  • Seeding Rates:

    • Drilled: 80–100 lbs per acre for uniform spacing and even growth.
    • Broadcast: 100–120 lbs per acre, followed by light harrowing or cultipacking to improve seed-to-soil contact.
  • Days to Maturity:

    • 60–90 days from planting to full maturity, with edible green forage available in 45–60 days.
  • Drought Tolerance:

    • Moderate – While oats can tolerate some drought conditions, they perform best with consistent moisture. Drought stress can stunt growth and reduce yield.
  • Saturated Soil Tolerance:

    • Moderate – Oats prefer well-drained soils but can tolerate brief periods of wet conditions. However, extended waterlogged conditions may affect growth and yield.
  • Shade Tolerance:

    • Low to Moderate – Oats thrive in full sun but can tolerate light shade, especially in areas with cooler climates.

Fertilization Guidelines for Forage Oats

  • Soil pH: Oats prefer slightly acidic to neutral soils, with a pH range of 6.0–7.0.
  • Nitrogen (N): Forage oats require moderate nitrogen levels to support healthy growth. Apply 30–40 lbs per acre of nitrogen before planting, with additional applications as needed during early growth.
  • Phosphorus (P): Apply 20–40 lbs P₂O₅ per acre if soil tests indicate low phosphorus levels, which is essential for root development and early growth.
  • Potassium (K): Apply 30–50 lbs K₂O per acre to support plant health and help with drought tolerance.

Fertilization Timing:

  • Apply phosphorus and potassium before planting based on soil test results.
  • Nitrogen should be applied at planting and again during the early stages of growth to ensure rapid development.

Herbicide Use for Forage Oats

  • Weed Management:

    • Weed control is important during the early growth stages, as oats can be outcompeted by grass and broadleaf weeds. Once established, oats can tolerate some weed pressure.
  • Herbicide Options:

    • Pre-emergence: Pendimethalin (Prowl) or Trifluralin (Treflan) can be used to control grass and broadleaf weeds before planting.
    • Post-emergence: 2,4-D is effective in controlling broadleaf weeds once oats are established.

Key Considerations:

  • Always follow herbicide label recommendations to prevent damage to oats, particularly during early growth.

Super cute clutch!
Color: Natural
This is a beautiful clutch. I got the “Natural” color, and the tones are definitely subtle. I am already eyeing the Spicy one too, but for me, the natural color is just easier to match with outfits. I did laugh though because my nephew said it looks like a taco, but honestly that just makes me love it even more! The material is extremely nice, it feels very premium and well made. I was a bit nervous because I have had cheaper bags with that shredded-style material that flakes and falls apart, but that is not the case here. It feels really well made. I cannot speak for long-term durability yet, but so far there is no shedding or anything like that. I also did not notice any loose stitching or threads at all, it just feels like a high-quality bag. It has small magnets to keep it closed, which work nicely. There is not a ton of space since it is a clutch, but there is still enough room for my phone and a few small items, so it works well. Overall, it is just a really gorgeous, well made bag, and I really do not have anything to complain about.

Lily Clutch - awkward size and fabric.
Color: Spicy, Color: Spicy
The Sam Edelman Lily Clutch handbag is a bit awkward, in my opinion. I've been told that it looks like a taco and like a folded up rug, and it does look rather awkward. It's also much larger and bulkier than I was expecting. I can't even find a comfortable or natural way to hold it. I don't love how it bulges out on the sides or the way it's difficult to grip because of the fabric design. It's eye catching and a good conversation piece, but it feels impractical. It's more of a statement piece than a useful every day bag or something I'd want to take on a long outing. It looks interesting, but it isn't a bag that makes my life easier or more compact.

Great boho clutch with lots of interest and texture, but bag itself is small, materials are fragile
Color: Spicy, Color: Spicy
This Sam Edelman Lily Clutch Handbag would be great for a beach vacation or summer getaway. It is very lightweight and almost has a fan-like appearance making it perfect for a hot Summer evening out. I ordered the 'spicy' red and natural color combo, and it looks just like in the product photos. The purse itself excluding the raffia fringe is pretty small and thin, and it does feel a bit fragile. You might be able to fit your phone, a card holder, and a lipstick in there, but that is about it. It is not lined on the inside so it is a touch see through. The magnetic closure is a nice touch and works well, and there is a brown faux leather logo on the outside. It also comes with a dustbag to store it in, which you will want to use since the raffia will easily collect dust and break off easily over time. I do understand that this is a name brand premium item, but it does feel a bit pricey given the overall quality of the materials. I would recommend this if it went on sale at a significant discount.

I think it's large for a clutch,but it's beautiful!
Color: Natural
I ordered this purse because I just love how different and fun it is. I thought it would be great for a sunny vacation. The first thing I noticed when it arrived was that it's much bigger than I thought it would be. The size is mostly in the raffia design. The purse itself is clutch-size, able to hold your phone, credit cards, and some lip gloss. Due to the size of the whole purse, I think it could use an optional strap. The quality and the craftsmanship are top-notch, however. The raffia is amazing, and the colors are very similar to a grass skirt, making it perfect for a tropical vacation or Polynesian-themed get-together.

Taco Purse
Color: Spicy
This might be the silliest bag my wife and I own, but it's definitely unique. I call it "the taco bag," and that's 100000% what it looks like to me. It's a clutch so it's not practical for every day use if you want to keep your hands free, but it has a fun, summery vibe that makes me think my wife would look great in a sundress at a pool party carrying this. Maybe. I honestly am not sure what kind of outfit this bag goes with, but it is exactly as pictured and it feels very well made, which I have come to expect from Sam Edelman. We have several bags by them and they are all lovely, this is the weirdest one and the hardest to figure out where we're going to use it, but I'm not mad I have it and if you like the taco look it lives up to it in person.
