Alocasia sp. Sulawesi 'Green Carpet'

Alocasia sp. Sulawesi 'Green Carpet' has narrow dark green leaves with strong ribbing and a pronounced midrib. The leaf surface is deeply textured, so the secondary veins form a raised pattern across each blade.

New leaves rise from the base and hold their narrow shape above the pot. As the plant fills out, the dark colour and ridged surface give each leaf clear definition from midrib to margin.

Ribbed dark leaves on upright growth

  • Leaf shape: Narrow, lance-shaped green leaves with a pointed outline.
  • Texture: Strong ribbing gives the blade a three-dimensional surface.
  • Veining: A pronounced midrib and clear secondary veins run through the leaf.
  • Colour: Rich dark green foliage with a strongly ribbed surface.
  • Growth habit: Upright clumping growth from the base, with no climbing support needed.
  • Pot behaviour: The narrow leaves rise above the pot and keep the ribbed surface visible as the plant fills out.

Texture and pot behaviour

Alocasia sp. Sulawesi 'Green Carpet' grows from the base as a compact clumping Alocasia. The leaves stay narrow, and the plant forms upright petioles with a tight clumping base.

The ribbed surface can hold dust along the veins and shows pest marks quickly. A bright filtered position, steady humidity and an airy substrate allow excess water to drain while keeping air around the roots.

Care for Alocasia sp. Sulawesi 'Green Carpet'

  • Light: Bright indirect light keeps the petioles upright and reduces scorch risk on the raised leaf surface.
  • Substrate: Use a chunky mix with bark, coco chips, perlite or mineral components. The pot should drain quickly after watering.
  • Water: Water when the mix is partly dry. The plant needs moisture, but stagnant wet substrate can damage the roots.
  • Humidity: Keep humidity around 60–80%, especially while new leaves are opening.
  • Temperature: Warm, even conditions are important. Cold wet roots can lead to yellowing and base stress.
  • Leaf care: Wipe the ribbed leaves gently so dust does not settle along the raised veins.

Issues on ribbed Alocasia leaves

  • Brown leaf edges: Dry air, inconsistent watering or mineral buildup can mark the margins.
  • Yellowing leaves: Wet substrate, cold roots or a pot that dries too slowly are common triggers.
  • Distorted new leaves: Low humidity during emergence can leave the ribbed surface uneven or creased.
  • Pest marks: Thrips and spider mites can show as pale streaks, dull patches or fine speckling between the veins.
  • Soft base: A soft base usually means the root area has stayed too wet for too long.

Safety for Alocasia sp. Sulawesi 'Green Carpet'

Alocasia sp. Sulawesi 'Green Carpet' contains calcium oxalate crystals and should be kept away from pets and small children. Chewed leaves or stems can cause irritation, drooling and digestive discomfort.

Good toy
Great toy for med dogs. A small one might have a bit of a hard time with the size but med and large dogs will love it. Thick plastic so they can’t pierce it quickly.

It is breakable
Although it was an exciting toy, it was not long lived. I can’t say it’s as durable as it claimed to be. My 12 lbs dachshund chewed through it in less than a day. He had fun, but there were too many little pieces he tore off. Not worth the risk of him ingesting them.

The dogs like it very much, it produces a lot of noise.
Size: Large, Size: Large
I’m rating this based on my dogs’ response to this toy – they absolutely love it, and it has seen more use without damage than any of their regular throwing toys. At the same time, unless you enjoy, REALLY ENJOY the sound of crunching water bottles, you may not like having this ball in the house. Pros: The rubber outer shell of the ball is durable, and can survive both chewing and pulling forces (as a note, my dogs do not concentrate on chewing - they use it more for play games). It’s big enough for my dogs to play tug of war with it, hooking their teeth in the mesh, and they since it bounces around if they drop or kick it, it makes the game more interesting than rope. They did crush the interior plastic, but they don't really seem to care. It’s much more engaging than a normal ball, and can be modified to hold treats, sticks, rope elements and other external bits, which my shepherd mix loves; he gets bored easily and frequently, and this can actually entertain him. Cons: This toy is loud, and produces repetitive crunching sounds. It is apparently really engaging to chew, and my dogs will produce the horrid plastic crackling up to half an hour at a time. If you let your dogs in and out, it would make a fine outdoor toy, but since I have a dog door, it migrates around to pretty much wherever the dogs are. I kind of hate it, but will probably buy another if they break this one since they enjoy it so much.
